While the original story of Naruto may be long over at this point, one of its biggest bromances, that of Kakashi Hatake and Might Guy, is far from over. Their hilarious and heartwarming bond injects some much-needed youthful exuberance into Kakashi’s weary mind. While Kakashi is absent in Boruto, the current plot has a solid way to bring him back.
As the Divine Trees, or Human God Trees, continue to seek out their targeted counterparts to devour in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, the series has already played around with adding new members like Ryū. While it’s implausible they could capture Kakashi as easily, the Claw Grimes overtaking Guy presents frightening possibilities.
With the Divine Trees dwindling after Ryū and Matsuri were defeated in the Land of Wind, Jura’s group will need to grow their numbers, especially if they hope to secure and gain the knowledge they seek. But, more importantly, devouring Guy in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex drives Kakashi directly into action, and out of irrelevance in the Naruto sequel.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Has a Dark Opportunity for Its Villains
“They Will Become Nourishment for the New, Fresh Leaves!”
Despite famously opening the Eighth Gate of Death to fight Madara Uchiha, saved only by Naruto’s chakra, Guy is still an ideal target for the Divine Trees. Given how the Boruto villains have absorbed a combination of Naruto legacy characters like Sasuke and Moegi, as well as Boruto newcomers like Bug and Shinki, nobody’s off-limits.
Still, with Kakashi still highly capable as shown by moments like in Naruto: Konoha’s Story — The Steam Ninja Scrolls, even without the Double Mangekyo Sharingan, it’s more likely that Guy, in his more vulnerable state, would be consumed. However, taking over Guy’s chakra signature, and his incredible taijutsu, would add a missing asset to the Divine Trees.

This newly-formed Divine Tree would boast the power of Guy in his prime, cruelly seeking to devour Kakashi. Much like Matsuri being drawn to Konohamaru, Ryū to Gaara, Hidari to Sarada, and Mamushi to Eida, the Divine Trees innately target the ones closest to their counterparts. Kakashi and Guy, after all, are best friends.
With Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #29 showing a crisis unfolding in Konoha at the hands of Mamushi’s clones, it’s a prime opportunity for the Divine Trees to bring in Claw Grimes to grow their numbers, without harming the village against Jura’s wishes per chapter #27. But devouring Guy and targeting Kakashi raise the stakes significantly for the series.
Naruto’s True Greatest Bromance Can Still Shine in Boruto
A Truly Unique Divine Tree
On top of a Divine Tree specializing in taijutsu and the Eight Gates, a Guy counterpart seeking out Kakashi adds to the diversified potential so far. Jura is the Ten-Tails reincarnation seeking out Naruto; Hidari’s target is Sarada, Sasuke’s daughter; Ryū wanted to absorb Shinki’s father. Mamushi wants Eida’s superior genes, meanwhile, and Matsuri harbored Moegi’s love for Konohamaru.
In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #14, Jura and the Divine Trees were revealed to want to consume their targets primarily to gain knowledge. Each of their targets are rather unique from one another, conferring different aspects of the human experience. Or, in Eida’s case, at least one cyborg.
A Divine Tree version of Might Guy similarly adds to their intellectual evolution by showcasing a true rivalry, while also turning Guy into an adversary, a frightening prospect. It gives the character an opportunity to properly settle the score with Kakashi in a way Guy no longer can. It’d explore their relationship in a way Naruto never could.
Despite being a fun side story, The Steam Ninja Scrolls explored Kakashi and Guy’s friendship and rivalry with no true intent of adding to it. Chapter #2 showed Kakashi continuing to humorously recall Guy’s training mishaps. They even achieved Kakashi’s “dream” together in chapter #3, finding the tree from the “Make-Out Paradise” movie. It feels content leaving their rivalry undisturbed.
But given Jura’s intellectual curiosity in recent chapters, such an experience would prove invaluable as they grow as a species. It makes sense to absorb two characters whose rivalry goes nonchalantly unresolved unlike that of Naruto and Sasuke. If not Kakashi, it can just as easily drive Rock Lee or his son, Metal Lee, out of the periphery.
However, with Mikio Ikemoto and Masashi Kishimoto sparingly bringing back legacy characters in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Rock Lee’s return still feels like a pipe dream. With his son completely sidelined to filler, no matter how satisfying it’d be to see either of them perform to Guy’s level, the emotional stakes of using Kakashi just fit better in this scenario.
