Nick Cave and Nicolas Cage are two of essentially the most unmistakeable personalities of their fields. One is a creative mastermind with hanging vampiric looks who has used his intimate appreciation of avant-garde composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen to raise a well-liked artwork kind to the realm of greatness—and the opposite fronts a band referred to as the Bad Seeds. Apparently, although, past the echo chambers of music blogs and Wicker Man memes, a wider world exists the place folks battle to inform them aside. Cave has written up to now about such instances of mistaken identification, and, final week, Cage informed The Guardian, “I don’t suppose there’s a day that goes by the place I’m not mistaken for Nick Cave.” In response, Cave shared a brand new anecdote in his newest dispatch of The Red Hand Files regarding the “persistent and considerably perplexing confusion surrounding our names.”

Cave relays a narrative from a São Paulo bar, the place he received chatting to a younger, wallowing Brazilian man who launched himself as Diego. When he requested for Cave’s title, the bartender leaned over and informed him, “Dude, you’re speaking to fucking Nick Cave!” Diego “turned super-animated,” says Cave, “leaping round on his stool, saying that he beloved me, that he was my best fan, and so forth and so forth.” After some hours of extra cheerful chatter, Cave remembers, Diego burst into tears and admitted his spouse had kicked me out. She hated him, he mentioned—“however she fucking loves you.” Cave replied, “Actually?” and received the inevitable information. “Yeah, Peggy Sue Bought Married is her favorite movie,” Diego mentioned. “She’s watched it like 100 instances.”

Such was the younger man’s “pitiful combination of tragedy and marvel” that Cave didn’t have the guts to inform him he had made a mistake. Continues Cave within the e-newsletter, “He requested me about my appearing profession. I mentioned one thing like, ‘I’m simply an extraordinary particular person such as you. Hollywood isn’t all it’s cracked as much as be. It may be a merciless place. It will get lonely generally,’ and so forth. After some time, I started to heat to my theme. I informed him that making Elevating Arizona was essentially the most extraordinary expertise and a highpoint in my profession, that John Goodman was an interesting and complicated character, and the way it was an actual privilege to work with the Coen brothers and that they have been ‘masters of their craft’ and all this bullshit. Finally, Diego determined he ought to return dwelling and inform his spouse, Ana, that he’d met her favorite actor, and that Nick Cave says he’s not silly, and that he’s a superb man.”

Cave wriggled out of that by saying he needed to be on set early. As a substitute, he wrote Diego a word: “Pricey Ana, Diego isn’t silly. He’s a superb man. Love, Nic Cage.”

Cave concludes, “Diego hugged and kissed me and stumbled out of the door, waving the word in his hand.… Anyway, these confusions between me and Mr. Cage occur pretty typically. However I don’t thoughts. I’m a fan. Have you ever guys seen Mandy? My God. What a movie.” Learn the complete account within the Red Hand Files archive.
