Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are poised to have a showdown at the box office next December, and a new fan-made poster hypes the impending battle.
With both films scheduled to release on December 18, 2026, artist BossLogic has released a new poster on X imagining a crossover between the worlds of Avengers and Dune. The poster, which is included below, features Doctor Doom’s iconic metal mask partially buried in the sand, with Avengers: Dunesday set as the crossover’s title.
“Multiverse Messiah,” BossLogic includes as his caption for the post, leaning into the multiversal aspects of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga and the fact that the third Dune movie will be adapting the events of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah.
There won’t be a real crossover between Avengers and Dune, of course, but the two films do find themselves in a curious situation. They are undoubtedly the most anticipated and hyped movies of 2026, and their opening on the exact same day means they could eat into each other’s box office.
Hailing from Joe and Anthony Russo, the Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday marks the first Avengers film since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Robert Downey Jr. will be making his franchise return, this time as Doctor Doom, and a recent trailer just revealed that Chris Evans’ Captain America will be playing a major role in the story.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, on the other hand, marks the end of the saga for Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, which began with 2021’s Dune. Dune: Part Two (2024) outperformed its predecessor both critically and commercially, making the third installment an anticipated event film.
Neither Disney nor Warner Bros. have thus far shown any signs of moving the release date for their respective films. It’s possible one studio will fold over the next eight or nine months, but a recent report from The Town claimed that Warner Bros. will be holding firm on the date for Dune: Part Three.
Given the talent involved and the fact that Doomsday is being set up as a direct continuation, of sorts, to Endgame, the Avengers film is almost guaranteed to be the higher grosser between the two. Dune: Part Two grossed $714 million, though, meaning Villeneuve’s film will still be drawing quite a crowd.
Avengers: Endgame grossed $2.8 billion worldwide in 2019.
Though there will be an element of cannibalization at the box office next December 18, it’s also possible that the shared release date will actually help both movies. Recall that Oppenheimer and Barbie released on the same day in July 2023, and the perceived rivalry between the two films ended up giving both a major boost.
The Barbenheimer phenomenon was unique, however, and recapturing that sense of virality for Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three will be challenging. It remains to be seen whether this shared release date will stick, but it’s looking like December 18, 2026, will be an exciting day for movie fans.
