Last Samurai Standing season 2 will be fresh in the minds of viewers after season 1’s cliffhanger, but will it happen? Last Samurai Standing‘s reviews are praising it for its action sequences and fast pacing, two elements evident in the season 1 finale. As Shujiro and his allies race towards Tokyo in a deadly competition, conspiracies and twists take place around them.
This sets up Last Samurai Standing for a continuation, down to the title card at the end of season 1 that reads, “End of Chapter One.” Clearly, Netflix’s Shogun-meets-Squid Game show was intended to last longer than just the initial six episodes released on the streaming service.
Last Samurai Standing season 1’s ending will undoubtedly start conversations about a continuation, and here is everything we know so far about the possibility.
Last Samurai Standing Season 2 Latest News
Thus far, little in the way of news has been provided about Last Samurai Standing season 2. Netflix will be waiting to see the critical reaction to season 1, as well as viewership numbers, before moving forward with the show. That said, an exclusive ScreenRant interview with Last Samurai Standing‘s Michihito Fuji, the show’s director and writer, saw season 2 briefly referenced.
Fuji was asked about his overall experience working on Last Samurai Standing. He outlined the positive experience of it all before stating, “If you can watch all the episodes, you’ll see the story still continues. And we do hope to continue.” This is the only solid reference to a continuation for the show that has been provided thus far.
As far as a release date is concerned, this is also just conjecture at this point. Last Samurai Standing began filming in mid-2024, releasing in November 2025. Therefore, if Last Samurai Standing season 2 is confirmed around the same time in 2026, it can be expected for a late 2027 release date.
Last Samurai Standing Season 2 Is Not Confirmed
Despite Fuji’s obvious intent to continue with Last Samurai Standing season 2, Netflix has yet to renew the show. This is likely due to the show’s release on the streaming service on November 13, meaning viewership figures and overall audience reaction to it are difficult to gauge at this point.
As is the case with most modern streaming shows, Netflix will be waiting to see how its subscribers react to Last Samurai Standing before committing to a second season. More news about a possible Last Samurai Standing season 2 should be expected in the final months of 2025, and, if creator Michihito Fuji has his way, it could be coming sooner rather than later.
Last Samurai Standing Season 2 Cast
With no official renewal for Last Samurai Standing season 2 being provided as of yet, there is also no confirmed cast. That said, the ending of Last Samurai Standing season 1 and the plot threads it left lingering for a continuation make it easy to guess which cast members will return.
Of course, the show’s main lead, Junichi Okada, would return as Shujiro Saga. Yumia Fujisaka would also return as Futaba Katsuki for Last Samurai Standing season 2, as would Kaya Kiyohara as Iroha Kinugasa. Masahiro Higashide would round out the main cast as Kyojin Tsuge.
Shota Sometani as Kocha Kamuy, an archer contestant in Kodoku, would likely return for a second season. So, too, would Taichi Saotome, Taiiku Okazaki, and Yuya Endo, who play Shujiro’s siblings, Shikura Adashino, Jinroku Keage, and Sansuke Gion, respectively. Kairi Jo would also reprise his role as Shinjiro Sayama, a young contestant of Kodoku allied with Kyojin.
Rounding out the show’s villains will be Gaku Hamada as Toshiyoshi Kawaji, Superintendent-General of police and the organizer of the Kodoku, and Hiroshi Abe as Gentosai Okabe, the elderly samurai hunting down Shujiro and his siblings. If Last Samurai Standing season 2 follows the storylines set up by season 1’s ending, these are the likeliest cast members to return.
Last Samurai Standing Season 2 Story Details
Again, concrete story details about Last Samurai Standing season 2 have not been revealed, but it can be guessed where the show would go from here if it were renewed. Last Samurai Standing season 1 ended with Shujiro and Futaba in Okazaki, intending to meet the former’s government ally.
However, the death of the Home Minister changed plans, meaning Shujiro and Futaba set off once more to Tokyo. Meanwhile, Iroha and her siblings vowed to kill Gentosai in order to be free of his relentless hunt. Kyojin was revealed to have been working with Gentosai, even conspiring to send the latter to kill Iroha, Shujiro, and their siblings.
Last Samurai Standing season 2 will undoubtedly lean more into Kyojin’s true motivations and loyalties, all while Kawaji ups the scale of Kodoku and his coup in the Japanese government. Last Samurai Standing season 1 set all of this up, meaning it stands to reason that a second season would further explore these dynamics and rivalries.
