Most Marvel fans expected that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s introduction of the Sentry would mean a grand comeback for the superhero, but the return of his original creator Paul Jenkins to write the character’s next book is a welcome surprise. 2000’s The Sentry #1 was a gamechanging debut, and now in 2026 Jenkins is back with a highly anticipated relaunch.
The Sentry #1 will be written by Paul Jenkins, with art by Christian Rosado. According to Marvel’s advanced synopsis for the series, the series will center around more than just the Sentry’s return. Of course, this means his dark half, the Void, is back as well.
For fans of the MCU’s Thunderbolts*, this is a perfect jumping-on point for Sentry lore.
Breakout “Thunderbolts” Star The Sentry Is Going Back To Basics With His New Comic Series
Sentry #1, Written By Paul Jenkins; Art By Christian Rosado; Coming In 2026 From Marvel Comics
Here is the full synopsis for The Sentry #1:
HE’S BEEN AN AVENGER, A DARK AVENGER AND A THUNDERBOLT!
THE SENTRY IS BACK — BUT SO IS THE VOID!
From creator Paul Jenkins comes a bold, high-stakes epic about MARVEL’S most dangerous hero — the SENTRY, a man with the power of a million exploding suns– and the dark entity born from his own psyche: the VOID. When the Void resurfaces, threatening to unravel reality itself, the Sentry must battle not only cosmic forces and criminal empires, but the monster within.
Guest-starring REED RICHARDS, SPIDER-MAN and the KINGPIN in a tale of impossible choices and devastating consequences. Can the Sentry save everything when the cost might be everything he loves?
In other words, this sounds like a “back to basics” approach for the Sentry, effectively rebooting the comic version of the newly-minted MCU hero. The new story appears primed to reset the Sentry back to his essential premise: a powerful superhero struggling against his own capacity for evil.
The question at the forefront of longtime Marvel readers’ minds is how much of Sentry’s character history this new story might retcon. As decades of appearances have made the Sentry/Void conflict more complicated, it might be up to Sentry’s creator, Paul Jenkins, to simplify things once more. In particular, Jenkins will have a choice to make about the Void’s origin.
The New Sentry Series Has The Chance To Clear Up The Confusion Surrounding “The Void” In Marvel Canon
Creator Paul Jenkins Reclaims His Characters In 2026
The true nature of the Void, the malevolent side of the Sentry, has evolved over the years. Originally, the Void was a manifestation of Sentry’s fractured psyche. Paul Jenkins’ novel idea for a superhero character was to have the hero and villain fighting for control of the same body. Subsequently Marvel stories, though, have changed the Void to a distinct entity.
In current Marvel canon, the Void is a primordial evil that bonded to the human Robert Reynolds when he gained superpowers and became the Sentry. That said, the synopsis for the new Sentry #1 describes the villain as “a dark entity born from [Sentry’s] psyche,” suggesting Paul Jenkins is reverting the lore back to his original intention.
A large contingent of Marvel readers, especially those who were captivated by Paul Jenkins’ original Sentry series when it was releases, will be happy if the Void is returned to its original status, and original purpose as the Sentry’s arch-nemesis. Following the hero’s MCU debut, this change also teases where Marvel plans to take the hero/villain combo in the future.
Sentry #1 will be available March 18, 2026 from Marvel Comics.
