The free giveaways on Steam continue throughout the end of the year, as there’s yet another game you can pick up for free. It might not be what anyone might expect, but free is free.
As usual, there’s a time limit. Make sure you grab this one on Steam while you can. Even if you have no intention of playing it anytime soon, you can always add it to your account.
Rat Quest Is 100 Percent Free On Steam Until Christmas Day
Get On It Now
Free until Christmas Day, Rat Quest is a platformer that asks you to reach the top of each level to “get sweet sweet cheese.” You’ll have the ability to jump up a series of platforms, grabbing cheese along the way, the primary currency of the game.
We even tried it out for a bit and found that the in-game shop teased quite a bit of content, including power-ups (like extra jumps), skins, and even a small amount of dialogue options. It also trolls you on multiple occasions. Skins can change gameplay too, including the “inverted rat” that flips the game upside-down.
If you like strange games like Frog Fractions, you’ll probably find something to like here with Rat Quest. It’s not nearly as expansive as the former (as far as we can see), but it might be right up your alley.
The tagline for Rat Quest is “the platforming in this game is very difficult! Every jump matters, if you fall, it’s right back to the bottom,” and it’s not kidding around. This can be a brutal game as you get used to the floaty controls, and falling down in any given section could result in a complete do-over.
According to the developer, achievements will be added “in the near future,” as well as more expansive controller support (so far it mainly just works for controlling the rat), and checkpoints are being “pondered.” The DLC, the “Quest For Swiss” is in the “finishing stages.”
It’s A Pretty Weird Game, To Be Honest
Be Prepared Going In
If the trailer wasn’t a clue, Rat Quest is a weird game, as the Steam page even notes that the mature content includes: “Acts of violence, kidnapping, murder and more!!!” We only came across one sequence that could be construed as mature content, but there might be more lurking under the surface.
Although it seems like a normal platformer at first glance, there are some Easter eggs you can find that are a bit more mysterious. For reference, I had the game installed on Steam and working in around 15 seconds. If you’re looking for an old-school experience that’s a bit strange, get this one for free and play it on a rainy day.
