A Stranger Things season 5, volume 2 clip reveals the fate of Derek Turnbow (Jake Connelly). The fan-favorite character was kidnapped by Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), along with other children that the villain had targeted, during Stranger Things season 5 volume 1’s ending.
Netflix has now released a clip showing Derek and the other children waking up in a seemingly idyllic field as peaceful music plays in the background. However, they have actually been transported to Vecna’s mind prison, the same place where Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) and Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) are trapped.
Vecna, in the form of Mr. Whatsit, stands over them on the field and explains that their memories may be foggy, but he saved them from monsters that tried to take them. The children are then taken to the Creel house, where Holly reunites with her friend from school, and Max observes the newcomers from afar.
According to Vecna, as long as the children don’t go into the woods, they will be safe in their new home. Check out the clip below:
The clip confirms that Derek and the other children are still alive, but Vecna’s manipulations prevent them from understanding the dire truth of their circumstances. Fortunately for them, Holly returned to the Creel house in order to help her peers, and she and Max can save them.
The full extent of Vecna’s plan in Stranger Things has not been revealed yet, but he shared with Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) that he intends to “reshape the world” and that the children are the perfect vessels for doing so, as they are weaker than older individuals and therefore easier to control.
Just as Vecna underestimated Will, who was last shown to have powers after tapping into Vecna’s hive mind, there is a good chance of the villain underestimating Derek as well. He is under the spell of Mr. Whatsit for now, but it is only a matter of time before he snaps out of it and sees the truth.
Derek became the breakout star in Stranger Things season 5’s cast in the volume 1 episodes due to his many comedic lines and character arc. He went from being called Dips*** Derek to Delightful Derek after Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and other characters put their faith in him.
Now, he has the opportunity to further earn the Delightful Derek nickname by foiling Vecna’s plan within the mind prison. He is poised to deliver more fan-favorite moments as Stranger Things season 5 continues and as the series heads toward its conclusion.
Stranger Things season 5, volume 2 releases on December 25 and volume 3 releases on December 31 at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
