If SpaceGodzilla’s origin story in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova takes a page from the playbook of his debut movie, his creation could tie in directly with an event that already occurred onscreen in Legendary’s Monsterverse. SpaceGodzilla doesn’t exist organically, as he was born from an accident that fused Godzilla’s “G-cells” with cosmic energy.
Thanks to the directory for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova put up by the Writer’s Guild of America, it’s hardly a secret anymore that SpaceGodzilla – a creature long theorized to be a future Monsterverse villain – will be the primary threat facing Godzilla and Kong in their next big-screen team-up film.
Of course, the nature of his story in the film remains open to speculation. But since the Monsterverse depictions of all of its Toho kaiju have been fairly accurate, it makes sense it’ll honor the past with regards to SpaceGodzilla too.
How SpaceGodzilla Was Created In Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
How far Godzilla x. Kong: Supernova will go in staying true to his roots in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla is unclear, but it’s possible that approach will include his origins, which Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla neatly tied to the past.
In the 1994 movie, it was revealed that SpaceGodzilla was born from the endings of two previous entries in the Heisei series. Biollante, a genetically engineered monster partially created from Godzilla’s DNA, flew into outerspace at the end of Godzilla vs. Biollante.
Later, Mothra and Battra dropped Godzilla in the ocean in Godzilla vs. Mothra. Afterward, Mothra left Earth, with Godzilla’s DNA still on her claws. Both of these incidents were used to explain how some of Godzilla’s cells found their way into outerspace, where they were exposed to the energy of a black hole, thus giving life to SpaceGodzilla.
Like Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, The Monsterverse’s Version May Be Connected To An Existing Event
Just as Toho did with Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, the Monsterverse could elect to connect SpaceGodzilla’s origin with an existing piece of Monsterverse lore. In Godzilla: Kong of the Monsters’ ending, Ghidorah picked up a battered Godzilla and flew him high into the sky before dropping him down to Earth.
Having been heavily injured, it’s theoretically plausible that some of Godzilla’s blood remained in the atmosphere after Ghidorah took him into space. If that’s the case, Godzilla x. Kong: Supernova could reveal that SpaceGodzilla technically already exists, and could have been growing for years now.
That would give SpaceGodzilla, at the very least, eight years to reach whatever form it first appears in during his grand entrance in Supernova. After all, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire took place in 2027, eight years after King of the Monsters. And Supernova could quite easily take place another few years after that.
An additional advantage this decision could hand Godzilla x Kong: Supernova stems from where Ghidorah could fit into the equation. If it does use this moment, it could make Ghidorah’s DNA an extra element of SpaceGodzilla’s origin, which could lead him to possessing physical characteristics or abilities associated with Ghidorah.
If SpaceGodzilla was created by the merged DNA of two alpha Titans in the Monsterverse, it will be easy for the film to play up the creature as the most dangerous force in the history of the Monsterverse, which would do more than enough to justify an epic team-up between Godzilla and Kong.
A King Of The Monsters Connection Would Avoid The Problems Of Several Other SpaceGodzilla Theories
Of course, the notion that Ghidorah secretly paved the way for SpaceGodzilla to be created in Godzilla: King of the Monsters is far from the only theory that’s been floated about what the Monsterverse will use to bring him into its world in a way that will link to the lore it’s already built.
For years, there’s been this idea that SpaceGodzilla is a product of the Hollow Earth world. It could be that a member of Godzilla’s species was mutated by something found within the planet’s underground realms, possibly even one of the Hollow Earth rifts. However, this approach naturally comes with the risk of undermining the cosmic connotations of the villain’s name.
Or, the Monsterverse could reveal that SpaceGodzilla was born when a Godzilla ancestor absorbed energy from a fallen meteor sometime in the Monsterverse’s ancient past, not unlike how Godzilla entered his “Evolved” state after acquiring power from Tiamat’s lair. That would make SpaceGodzilla an ancient Monsterverse Titan, and in turn, a villain either Godzilla or the Kongs did battle with centuries ago.
While this would certainly amount to an interesting twist on SpaceGodzilla and would fit in well with the Monsterverse’s ongoing themes and focus on ancient Titan rivalries, it would simultaneously feed into a tired trope. Every major Monsterverse villain, including MechaGodzilla (by virtue of King Ghidorah), has been an old rival of Godzilla or Kong’s species.
With that in mind, a significantly more refreshing strategy would be to lean away from the Hollow Earth and forgotten battles from Godzilla’s past. Instead, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova can introduce an entirely new threat that Godzilla has never encountered before, albeit one that still recieved a proper setup in the Monsterverse.
