Sydney Sweeney Finds Redemption As New R-Rated Thriller Cements Huge 3-Year Box Office Streak

Sydney Sweeney‘s new thriller is a box office hit, and despite the actress starring in a few duds over the last couple of years, she has now cemented a positive streak. After her breakout role as the intense Cassie Howard on HBO’s Euphoria, Sweeney has become one of Hollywood’s brightest rising stars. The actress has several projects in the works, becoming an avid producer.

Sure, some of Sweeney’s choices over the last few years did not work, such as the star-studded Eden or her foray into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe with Madame Web. However, even those two box office failures found new life on streaming as hits on Netflix. Now, Sweeney’s new film, a thriller with a talented ensemble, cements a positive trend for the star.

The Housemaid, Sweeney’s latest theatrical release, has become a bona fide hit. With a $35 million budget, the book adaptation is already at $135 million worldwide. Based on how it needed to land in the $70 million to $87.5 million range to break even, the film is already tens of millions in profit. The Housemaid gave Sweeney a box office hit in 2025.

By doing that, it cements a positive box office trend for the actress, who now has at least one financially successful movie every year for the past three years. That streak started with 2023’s Anyone but You. The R-rated rom-com also helped Glen Powell become Hollywood’s new movie star, grossing an impressive $220 million against a $25 million budget.

After her surge in popularity by starring opposite Powell in the hit movie, Sweeney had a smaller 2024, though she still fronted a box office success. The horror movie Immaculate ended its global run with $35 million, turning a profit when compared to its simple $9 million budget. The Housemaid‘s success both cements that three-year streak and ensures future hits for Sweeney.

With The Housemaid projected to gross $220-250 million, Sweeney is coming back for more. The movie is based on Freida McFadden’s hit novel of the same name. The book series spans three entries, which could see Sweeney’s new R-rated thriller movie franchise continue for years to come, and the first step towards that future has been taken.

Only 17 days since the movie was released in theaters, The Housemaid 2 has been officially announced. Both Sweeney and director Paul Feig will return for the sequel, which was teased at the end of the first film. With The Housemaid projected to surpass Anyone but You‘s box office, Sydney Sweeney likely has two more hits on her hands, which should continue her streak.
