Tennis: Face Down within the Backyard Tour

    Alaina Moore:

On a cross-country drive on the finish of tour, our van and trailer blew 4 tires in fast succession. That specific stretch of freeway was a tire graveyard. I counted the shredded stays of 12 tires from the place we sat on the facet of the highway, swapping out our final spare. Our unhealthy luck was closely contrasted by the nice night time we’d simply had in Houston. The highs and lows of touring are unnatural, disorienting. On the shoulder of I-40, I started writing the lyrics to “12 Blown Tires.” It’s a constellation of recollections from the highway, and of our marriage, two endeavors which might be utterly, hopelessly entangled.

Once we recorded “12 Blown Tires” a number of months later, I had the sense of distilling the previous 15 years into 4 minutes of music. It felt like the top of one thing, although I wasn’t certain what. Patrick and I spent most of our twenties and all of our thirties targeted on Tennis. It has been essentially the most joyous, bewildering, difficult, and humbling expertise. After ending Face Down within the Backyard, it turned clear that we had mentioned the whole lot we needed to say and achieved the whole lot we needed to realize with our band. This will likely be our final studio album, at the least on this configuration as Tennis. We’re able to pursue different inventive tasks and to create space in our lives for brand new issues. In that gentle, the upcoming tour feels extra poignant, like a concluding thought. These two children from Denver who solely ever dreamed of taking part in a number of home reveals are very fulfilled. Maybe we’ll see you on the highway. As all the time, thanks.
