Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is the director of two new documentaries, Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) and Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, and so they each have newly launched trailers. Watch the movies under.
Questlove’s Sly Stone documentary premiered yesterday (January 23) at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The movie, concerning the funk icon and his band, options appearances from D’Angelo, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Outkast’s André 3000, and others. Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) will stream on Hulu, starting on Thursday, February 13.
Questlove co-directed Girls & Gents… 50 Years of SNL Music with OuncesRodriguez. The trailer teases contributions from the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Jack White, Rage Towards the Machine’s Tom Morello, and extra. The film premieres, on NBC, on January 27 and can stream on Peacock the next day.
The Sly Stone and Saturday Evening Reside documentaries are Questlove’s first main movie works since his beloved directorial debut, Summer of Soul. The Roots drummer can also be attributable to direct a brand new remake of The Aristocats.
