Tom Hanks’ Greyhound is still speeding around the track six years after premiering on what was then known as Apple TV+.
The 2020 World War 2 thriller starring Hanks as the dogged commander of a Naval vessel hounded by U-boats is putting up big streaming numbers in 2026, landing in the top ten on Apple TV’s worldwide movie chart for January 25.
Greyhound is performing strongest in the countries of Paraguay, Slovenia, and Tajikistan, coming in at #2 in all three markets. It’s also putting up strong numbers in Cambodia, Greece, and South Korea, ranking #3 in those far-flung spots.
The harrowing war film is also a top 5 performer for Apple TV in Egypt, Grenada, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Lithuania, Niger, and Norway.
Greyhound’s streaming numbers are also getting a boost in the UK, where it comes in at #6. The film tells the story of a perilous transatlantic crossing from America to Britain during the darkest days of World War 2, when German submarines prowled the seas largely unchecked.
Written by and starring Hanks, Greyhound was at one time earmarked for theatrical release, but COVID caused it to be delayed, and it was ultimately given a streaming-only roll-out.
Critics were mostly positive in their assessment of Greyhound, pushing the movie to a 78% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The epic World War 2 film’s 76% Popcornmeter rating shows audiences are more-or-less in step with professional reviewers when it comes to Hanks’ celebration of Naval grit.
Reviewers praised Greyhound for its technical achievements, and for its fast-paced, economical approach to storytelling. Hanks’ film received negative responses from critics who felt the characters were under-developed.
ScreenRant’s own Greyhound review was among the lukewarm ones. Hanks was given kudos for doing his research, but was taken to task for failing to truly explore the inner-life of his character, the fictional Captain Ernest Krause. “What you end up with is a better history lesson than drama, in spite of the obvious care with which Hanks brings the story of Greyhound to life.”
Hanks indeed is not yet ready to let the story of Greyhound go, as it was announced back in 2022 that a sequel is in the works. In a 2025 update, it was reported that the follow-up would begin filming in January 2026, in Australia, with Hanks back as Krause, and Aaron Schneider returning to direct.
The Greyhound sequel reportedly will cover Krause’s exploits from D-Day through the end of the war in the Pacific.
