After IT: Welcome to Derry wrapped up its first season in December, there have been no announcements regarding a renewal for a second season, but HBO is finally breaking its silence. The series, which is a prequel to the two big-screen IT films released in 2017 and 2019, has been a huge success with critics and viewers alike, earning an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score.
According to Casey Bloys (via Deadline), the future of Welcome to Derry is “not in limbo at all,” despite the cable network’s silence. Rather, executive producers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti are “hard at work” figuring out potential storylines for season 2.
Once they come up with a strong idea, then Bloys will absolutely renew the series. “I would happily do it,” he claimed. “They need to land on something they’re excited by creatively. We’ll be there.”
Andy, who directed IT and IT: Chapter Two, previously revealed that his goal is to create three seasons of Welcome to Derry, with the second installment taking place 30 years before the events of the first season.
The Stephen King novel IT has been adapted multiple times for the screen over the years, first as an ABC miniseries in 1990 and then on the big screen with a two-part cinematic event.
