23 Years Later, Aragorn’s Best LOTR Quote Remains One Of The Most Beautiful In Fantasy Movie History

The Lord of the Rings is perhaps the best fantasy story ever told, and one of the lines from the fantasy films is arguably the strongest that the genre has ever seen. Although every character in The Lord of the Rings has fantastic quotes in the series, Aragorn may have the best writing behind him, resulting in several powerful scenes.

Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn is overall one of the highlights of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. While Mortensen had to be recast for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, it can barely be denied that he was the perfect choice for the original films. Strong, masculine, and incredibly charismatic, Mortensen’s Aragorn powerfully represented the ongoing strength of the Fellowship.

More than this, the character was incredibly well written in the film, which saw Aragorn often being different from the book. Confident, full of humility, and a natural leader, Aragorn naturally took the center of the larger story, which led toward him taking his rightful place as the King of Gondor. This progression felt natural thanks to the brilliant script.

Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson collaborated on writing the original trilogy of films, and this material was a major asset to the production. While not always faithful, the film’s scripts built a believable world from Tolkien’s Middle-earth, which Peter Jackson was then able to bring to life visually. Much of the strength of this work is embodied in a single powerful line.

Aragorn Beautifully Acknowledges The Hobbits In LOTR: Return Of The King

As Aragorn is crowned King of Gondor, and the Hobbits come toward him to bow, he stops them and bows himself. “My friends, you bow to no one,” he says, acknowledging the important work that they have done for the powers of Middle-earth. Without their efforts, none of the story’s necessary events to save their world would have occurred.

The relationship between races in The Lord of the Rings is important, and much of the tension between Elves and Men is especially palpable throughout the series. Therefore, Aragorn speaking these simple words as he takes his royal place makes for an especially powerful moment.

Despite an appearance of hierarchy, every living thing holds an inherent worth in Middle-earth, and each can uplift themselves by their deeds. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin have all shown themselves to be essential members of the initial Fellowship, and have offered their own unique skills to what has occurred.

Merry and Pippin both serve well in their own ways. Pippin saves Faramir from being burned alive, while Merry helps to defeat the Witch-king of Angmar during the Battle of Pelennor Fields.

Sam and Frodo, meanwhile, complete the most instrumental task: burning the Ring in the fires of Mount Doom. It is Frodo’s task to complete, but he never would have made it without Sam. Seeing not just Aragorn, but the entire kingdom of Gondor bow to them out of respect makes for such a powerful scene.

Aragorn’s Line Was A Perfect Change From The Lord Of The Rings Books

While The Lord of the Rings movies were faithful to the books in many ways, they did deviate in some significant ways, including with this line. Despite the strength of the narrative and the telling in the original books, one of the greatest changes the films made to the books was in updating a fair portion of the dialogue.

The books are filled with songs and a great deal of poetic monologuing. While this made sense on the page and injected the stories with an almost mythic sense of whimsy, the movies necessarily had to depend on using more direct speech in order to better establish the story and the dynamics between characters.

Eliminating scenes like “The Scouring of the Shire” and the sequences with Tom Bombadil were more controversial changes, but it is difficult not to see the updating of the dialogue as an asset to the film. This line in particular is one of the strongest in the movie, and in all of fantasy storytelling.

Aragorn is a bold and beautiful character, and giving him lines like this is a major reason why. With strong writing and a fantastic performance, this quote helped to make him among the best characters in all of The Lord of the Rings.
