While Peanuts’ Charlie Brown may be famous for his signature tagline, “Good Grief!”, the character has a multitude of iconic lines in Charles M. Schulz’s legendary comic strip. Now, we’ve narrowed down what might just be Charlie Brown’s funniest quote. What makes this line so funny is just how terribly yet hilariously relatable it is.

If you’re a fan of Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip, then you’re likely more than familiar with one of the strip’s running gags: Charlie Brown’s seemingly infinite bad luck, which often earns a “Good Grief!” or even a “Why Me?!” from the character. It isn’t rare for Charlie Brown to express his frustrations with the world and his rotten luck, often feeling as if the universe is against him. And it is this very topic that has resulted in one of Charlie Brown’s funniest and most relatable quotes: “Sometimes, I lie awake at night, and I ask, ‘Why me?’ Then a voice answers, ‘Nothing personal. Your name just happened to come up.’”

31 Years Later, Calvin and Hobbes’ Greatest Quote Still Has No Equal

The perspective of a mischievous six-year-old boy and his imaginary tiger has resulted in some of the greatest quotes in comic strip history.

This quote comes from Schulz’s November 13, 1993, comic strip, which pictures Charlie Brown lying in bed, contemplating life, or more accurately, contemplating his rotten luck in life, and the universe’s answer to his question of “why me?” There are numerous things about this strip that make it one of Charlie Brown’s best lines, but perhaps the biggest contributor to its humor is just how relatable it is.

Most adults have likely experienced a day, week, month, or even a longer period in life that feels defined by a rotten streak of bad luck, or perhaps even as if the universe is out to get them. As a result, most of us have found ourselves where Charlie Brown is in this strip: lying in bed, wide awake when we should be sleeping, contemplating everything that has gone wrong, and asking ourselves the defining question, “Why me?”

Of course, when most of us ask the question, “Why me?” we typically don’t receive an answer from a mysterious voice that says, “Nothing personal. Your name just happened to come up.” While the latter part of the Charlie Brown quote offers a bit of surreal humor, it also speaks to the apparent randomness of misfortune we all face, including the king of rotten luck himself.

This comic strip is among some of Charlie Brown’s most famous and has even earned its own title, “Nothing Personal.” While there are various artistic renditions of this strip floating around, the one shown here is an original serigraph by Charles M. Schulz, based on his Peanuts comic strip from November 13, 1993.

According to the Charles M. Schulz Museum, the serigraph “is one of eight original watercolors Schulz created from daily strips he selected and hand-tinted for the 1993 limited-edition lithographs series The Cartoon Collection (produced in a run of 500).” It feels particularly fitting that such an iconic Charlie Brown quote would be immortalized in such a special way.

Notable Mentions: Charlie Brown’s OTHER Best Quotes About Life

“Sometimes, I lie awake at night, and I ask, ‘Why me?’ Then a voice answers, ‘Nothing personal. Your name just happened to come up.’” is a classic Charlie Brown quote, but the character has no shortage of great lines. Some other notable mentions, especially on the topic of life being a rough ride, include: “I’ve developed a new philosophy. I only dread one day at a time,” and “In the book of life, the answers aren’t in the back.”

These are obviously Screen Rant’s top picks, but such designations are always subjective to the viewer. So, we’re interested in hearing which Charlie Brown quotes YOU think rank among Peanuts’ all-time greatest!
