Since the very first entry was launched way back in 1987, the Final Fantasy franchise has become a cornerstone of the gaming industry. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Square Enix RPG series boasts 16 mainline entries. However, if you were to consider all of the prequels, spin-offs, tactical subseries, and mobile titles, this would equal up to 80 unique entries over the past four decades.
Now with even more titles in the pipeline, such as Final Fantasy Resonance and Final Fantasy VII Revelation, it is an exciting time for fans.
However, if you cannot wait that long, and want another game to tide you over, we have compiled a list of five free Steam games which will scratch that Final Fantasy itch.

Persona5: The Phantom X
As a spin-off of 2016’s Persona 5, Persona5: The Phantom X is a 2025 RPG which takes place in modern-day Tokyo. As always, players will take on the role of a group of characters who are able to wield Personas, a physical manifestation of one’s psyche that is strengthened in battle by forging bonds with others.
In this installment, you will follow the story of a high-school student, codenamed “Wonder”, who seeks to retake the hopes and desires of humanity after almost losing them himself.
Featuring the turn-based combat and dungeon-crawling that Final Fantasy enjoyers know and love, this Persona spin-off may have slipped under the radar, but it is now available to download for free courtesy of Steam.
