The teaser trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters just dropped, and it looks like Kong has reclaimed the title “King” over Godzilla. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 is set to premiere on February 27, 2026, on Apple TV, and the most recent teaser trailer has revealed that King Kong is back and that Kurt Russell will be returning too.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the second TV show in the ever-expanding Monsterverse universe, spans the time periods seen in Kong: Skull Island and the modern timeline up to just before Godzilla vs. Kong. While season 1 saw Godzilla as the primary kaiju protagonist, season 2 appears to have Kong stepping up to the plate.
Kong Is Taking Over As The Star Of Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Season 2
By the look of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ season 2 trailer, King Kong is going to be the star of the show this season, though a roar heard from Godzilla towards the end of the episode suggests the King of Monsters is not completely sitting this round out. Kong has increasingly been the focus of the Monsterverse recently.
In Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021 and Godzilla x Kong in King Kong is more of the protagonist than Godzilla, who still gets plenty of screentime but loses out when it comes to the emotional arc of Kong. Now it seems that Kong will be the star of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and he’s featured heavily in the trailer.
While the Monsterverse was originally built on Godzilla, a surprising coup for Legendary Pictures, which managed to make a deal with the notoriously cagey Toho Co., King Kong has become the bigger face of the franchise. His presence in the series should also answer a big question about Kong in the movies.
What Kong’s Story Will Be In Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters
While the scenes of King Kong in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters don’t give a clear idea of what the giant ape will be doing in season 2, the end of season 1 and the films can help us guess what Kong will be up to. From the closeups of Kong in Monarch, he certainly doesn’t look too happy.
At the end of Monarch season 1, the Apex team has escaped the Hollow Earth and surfaced on Skull Island, with disparate groups of researchers finally coming back together. As they greet one another and prepare to evacuate, Kong crashes through the treeline to confront them and bangs his chest.
How soon after that scene Monarch picks up is unclear, but Apex is clearly dealing with a more feral version of Kong than the one who fights Mechagodzilla a few years later. In Kong vs. Godzilla, King Kong has already been captured, so it’s likely Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will show how that feat was accomplished.
