Exclusive: Kartik Aaryan on Bollywood’s Insider–Outsider Debate

Actor Kartik Aaryan has once again spoken candidly about the insider–outsider debate in Bollywood. He reflects on his own journey and why the conversation remains relevant even today. In a conversation with Filmfare, Kartik addressed regrets, career setbacks and the structural advantages that continue to shape the industry.
Addressing the insider–outsider debate, Kartik said he is now personally beyond it but continues to speak up for newcomers. “If this debate didn’t exist, people wouldn’t understand the struggle of outsiders,” he explained. He emphasised that the issue isn’t about criticising individuals but about recognising unequal starting points. “When a big filmmaker launches someone, they begin from a much higher level. Outsiders don’t have money, perception or access.”

When asked if there was anything he would change about his journey, Kartik admitted that while some films were driven by necessity early on, he wouldn’t alter his past. “I’ve had fun in all my films,” he said, adding that both successes and failures taught him life lessons. However, he did point to Akashwani as a turning point. The film was close to his heart, but its failure, he said, “shattered my possibilities” at the time. What followed was a long six-year climb before he found momentum again with Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, leading to hits like Luka Chuppi, Pati Patni Aur Woh and the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise. “One film can make or break you,” he noted, admitting that if anything could change, it would be the fate of Akashwani.

Kartik stressed that talent ultimately matters, but not everyone gets the time or opportunities he did. Recalling his early days, he shared how many aspiring actors he lived with eventually returned home, often in tears. “I’ve seen people come from outside and go back because it just didn’t happen for them,” he said.
While acknowledging that audience awareness has grown and filmmakers are increasingly backing fresh faces, Kartik pointed out that differences still exist, especially in endorsements, social media leverage and film choices. “These are real differences,” he said, adding that today he is grateful to finally be in a position of choice after years of giving “200%” to whatever came his way.
