Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for directing films such as Kaante, Shootout At Wadala, Jazbaa and Kaabil, has passed away at the age of 57. The director breathed his last on October 30, 2026.
According to reports, Gupta suffered a fall in his bathroom on Thursday night. The incident reportedly went unnoticed until the following morning, October 31, when he was found. However, the exact circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be officially confirmed.
Sanjay Gupta was widely recognised for his work in the action and crime thriller genres. One of the most notable aspects of his career was his frequent collaboration with Sanjay Dutt. The filmmaker worked with the actor on several projects, including Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004) and Zinda (2006). Their professional association also extended to Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), which Gupta produced.
He later directed Shootout at Wadala (2013), a crime drama inspired by real-life events. Apart from action films, Gupta also explored different stories with Jazbaa (2015), starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Kaabil (2017), featuring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam.
Along with directing, Gupta was actively involved in film production. Some of his notable production ventures include Shootout at Lokhandwala, Plan, Woodstock Villa, Acid Factory and Pankh. He also served as a producer or co-producer on several of his directorial projects.
Before making his mark as a director, Gupta began his career in the entertainment industry by working in post-production and sound design. He also assisted filmmaker Pankaj Parashar on projects such as the television series Karamchand and the film Jalwa.
Interestingly, the filmmaker had survived a serious road accident several years ago while travelling from Pune to Mumbai. Gupta was reportedly driving the car himself when the accident occurred. Despite the severity of the incident, he survived and continued his filmmaking career. Our condolences are with the family of the deceased.
