Nearly a decade after becoming the trilogy’s best-reviewed installment, Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane is coming to a new streaming home. Originally written as a low-budget thriller before being developed into being part of the series, the film centers on a woman who, after getting into a car accident, awakens in a bunker designed by a doomsday prepper who claims that a mysterious event has left the surface of the Earth dangerously unihabitable.
Led by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., 10 Cloverfield Lane rode its twisty plot and mysterious franchise connections to become a major hit. In addition to its critical acclaim, the movie was also a box office smash, grossing over $110 million against its $15 million production budget, leaving the franchise’s theatrical showings on a high note prior to shifting to Netflix for the third installment, The Cloverfield Paradox.
Now, 10 Cloverfield Lane is shifting to a new streaming home with Paramount+. Having previously been available to stream on Tubi, Hoopla, Kanopy, Peacock and Prime Video, the film will now come back to its original home of Paramount beginning on January 1, and with no specific time attached to its release is expected to begin streaming as soon as midnight of New Year’s Day.
While known now for being a successful endeavor, 10 Cloverfield Lane was something of a big swing for Paramount at the time of its release. Much like the original film did for future Batman helmer Matt Reeves, the 2016 sci-fi thriller served as a springboard for Trachtenberg in the director’s chair, serving as his feature debut before he went on to revive the Predator franchise with Prey, Killer of Killers and Badlands.
The studio also had to trust in the movie’s ominous and viral marketing campaign to carry it to being a box office success. Both the studio and producer J.J. Abrams had success with that before on the original Cloverfield and 2011’s Super 8. But even still, as the movie’s plot turned out to be more about the tense dynamic between its thread lead characters more so than its overarching mystery, it would have been understandable if the studio wanted to lean into that.
