Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2!Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 served as a Scream reunion for Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich, but director Emma Tammi teases that Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 will give them bigger roles. Lillard has starred in both of Blumhouse’s adaptations of Scott Cawthon’s video game franchise as William Afton, founder of the titular pizzeria who used its family-friendly nature to hide his child serial-killing ways before the chain eventually shut down.
Ulrich, meanwhile, joined the movie series in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 as Henry Emily, the father of one of Afton’s victims, Charlotte, who went on to possess The Marionette animatronic, the central villain of the 2025 sequel. During the credits of the new film, a voice recording left by Henry for Josh Hutcherson’s Mike revealed Ulrich’s character to be the co-creator of Freddy Fazbear’s animatronics and warned Mike of The Marionette’s malevolent abilities.
As the movie made its way to digital platforms, ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan interviewed Emma Tammi to discuss Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. When asked about the chances of creating a proper Scream reunion after the 2025 sequel didn’t see them share any scenes together, the director teased that both Lillard and Ulrich will have bigger roles come Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, though cautioned it hasn’t been determined yet if the pair will be on screen together in the next film:
If we were to make one, and whether or not there would be actual interaction between them or just still remaining in the same film, but in separate scenes, it’s all kind of yet to be revealed. But yes, I think it would continue scratching all of our itch to see more of them and bring that reunion even more to life.
Much like the first film, Lillard’s Five Nights return proved to be something of a smaller role, appearing in nightmare sequences to Elizabeth Lail’s Vanessa, who was still haunted by her father nearly murdering her in the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie’s ending. Ulrich was also largely contained to his one scene laying out some of the backstory regarding the restaurant and his daughter’s murder before the end-credits lore reveal.
That being said, the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 ending made it clear, at the very least, that Lillard would be back with a vengeance come the potential third film. As a few young adult characters explored the abandoned original Freddy’s location, the Springtrap suit was seen powering up, indicating that Afton’s soul had finally merged with the menacing yellow rabbit mascot and is ready to begin a new streak of killings.
Additionally, the end-credits voiceover from Ulrich proved to be more than just an extra lore reveal, as Henry could seemingly be heard getting attacked by someone in the background. With it coming in the midst of his warnings about The Marionette, it’s unclear whether this message came around the time the menacing animatronic was possessing McKenna Grace’s Lisa, Megan Fox’s Toy Chica, Piper Rubio’s Abby or Vanessa, which a third film could answer.
All 17 Animatronics In Five Nights At Freddy’s 2
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 includes even more animatronics than the first movie, with multiple versions of Freddy, Chica, Bonnie, and Foxy appearing.
While Tammi denotes that it’s not yet decided whether they’ll share the screen together, there are a variety of ways for Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 to finally give Lillard and Ulrich the reunion Scream fans have been hoping for. The most likely would be flashbacks expounding on Afton and Henry’s history together, particularly in the wake of Charlotte’s murder, though he could be revealed to be alive after the end-credits attack and taken to Springtrap. Given the 2025 sequel quickly became a box office hit, it does seem all but guaranteed Tammi and her crew will figure this out in the near future.
