MTV’s 24-Hour Music Channels Shut Down Across the Globe

As of today (December 31st), MTV’s remaining 24-hour music channels worldwide are going dark.

BBC reports that the music network’s UK channels — MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live — are among those signing off the air today. Local media further confirm that channels in Australia, Poland, France, Brasil, and elsewhere are shutting down. MTV’s flagship channel will remain on the air, while prioritizing non-music reality programing. In an ironic, full-circle nod, MTV Music ended its broadcast by airing The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star” — the same clip that was the first video ever played on MTV.

The decision to shut down MTV’s music channels comes as Paramount Skydance seeks to cut costs across its global portfolio following its merger earlier this year.
