Directed by Suparn S. Varma, the film is inspired by the landmark 1985 Supreme Court judgment in the Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case which was a huge moment in Indian legal history that redefined maintenance rights for women. Haq stars Yami Gautam as Shazia Bano, a woman who finds herself at a crossroads after her husband, a successful advocate named Abbas Khan (played by Emraan Hashmi), abruptly ends their marriage through triple talaq.
Unlike traditional, loud legal thrillers, Haq has been praised for its sensitivity and restraint. The story follows Shazia’s journey from a housewife to a symbol of courage as she tackles the complexities of the legal system to secure her rights and the future of her children.
