Sanjay Dutt has opened up about the origins of the much-talked-about sequel to Khal Nayak, revealing that the idea dates back to a deeply personal phase of his life. Speaking about the project, the actor shared that the concept for Khal Nayak Returns first took shape during his time in jail.
Recalling that period, he said, “In jail, I asked everyone around me who would be interested in watching it… the 4,000 inmates said they all would.” He further added that he encouraged them to contribute creatively, saying, “I asked all of them to write one page about it, and it took me a while to read all 4,000 pages.”

Dutt went on to explain how the idea eventually moved forward once he stepped out. “When I came out on parole, I asked Subhash sir to go through it. After that, he said it should be made,” he shared, crediting filmmaker Subhash Ghai for backing the vision.

The original Khal Nayak, released in 1993, went on to become a cult classic, with Dutt’s portrayal of Ballu emerging as one of Bollywood’s most iconic anti-heroes. Over the years, the film has maintained strong recall, making the announcement of a sequel particularly significant for fans of the original.

The sequel, titled Khal Nayak Returns, is expected to revisit the legacy of the original while introducing a fresh narrative. While details about the storyline and cast remain under wraps, the project has already generated considerable curiosity, especially given the gap of over three decades since the first film.

Dutt’s revelation adds a unique backstory to the sequel, linking its origins to a phase of reflection and creative exploration during his incarceration, now shaping into a full-fledged cinematic project.
