Terry Pratchett’s Discworld is one of the most beloved fantasy franchises of all time, with iconic characters, a unique sense of humor and compelling, self-contained plots that allow readers to jump aboard pretty much anywhere.
Despite that fact, there’ll never be a better time than 2026 to read (or re-read) one Discworld book in particular. That’s because you’ll be joining thousands of readers in discovering one of the most underrated entries in Pratchett’s oeuvre.
The book in question is Unseen Academicals, which is about to experience a huge resurgence thanks to an incredible charitable act by the Transworld publishing house.
10k Copies of Discworld Novel Given Away to Support National Year of Reading
As reported by The Bookseller, Discworld publisher Transworld just donated a staggering 10,000 copies of Unseen Academicals to be distributed as part of the National Year of Reading. The 2026 campaign is intended to promote literacy and “combat the steep decline in children’s reading,” with the campaign slogan ‘Go All In’ encouraging businesses and educators to back the effort.
Unseen Academicals follows the staff of the magical Unseen University as they prepare for a football match that will define the future of both the university and the sport. The book stars breakout character the Librarian – a former wizard transformed into an orangutan, who can travel between worlds via secret shortcuts found within bookshelves.
The book has been chosen due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the hope that young sports fans will be gripped by the sporting theme. The books will be distributed across 21 Literacy Hubs which work with “communities where poverty and low literacy are having the greatest impact,” with the donated books being part of a limited-run trade edition aimed at young football fans.
Speaking to The Bookseller, Director of the Terry Pratchett Estate Rob Wilkins says:
Working alongside Terry at the peak of his literary power as he wrote Unseen Academicals was such a great joy, and I am thrilled to partner with the National Literacy Trust and Transworld to bring this glorious book to the readers who need it most. Terry knew better than anyone that having an interest in something could open previously undiscovered creative doors, and I hope anyone fascinated by football or fantasy or both, will enjoy the magic in these pages.
Anyone reading Unseen Academicals this year can do so in the knowledge that they’re joining thousands of young readers on a vital voyage into the world of fantasy and fiction.
A New Series of Discworld Adaptations Are On Their Way
As if this incredibly generous donation wasn’t enough to encourage fans back to the Discworld, a slate of new graphic novel adaptations are planned to release soon, retelling some of Pratchett’s most beloved works.
Adaptations of The Wee Free Men (adapted by Rhianna Pratchett, coming 2027 from Puffin), Thief of Time (adapted by Gary Chudleigh and Rachael Stott, coming September 2027 from Transworld) and Monstrous Regiment (adapted by Jon Wood, coming 2027 from Transworld) are all on their way.
In terms of serving younger readers, Terry Pratchett’s daughter Rhianna Pratchett has celebrated that the YA novel Wee Free Men will be part of what’s intended as the first wave of comics, stating:
I’m delighted to be adapting The Wee Free Men, which is one of my favorite books by my father. Growing up in Wiltshire, England’s ‘Chalk Country’, and having a shepherdess grandmother makes it a very personal book for me, as well as being the gateway into the superb Tiffany Aching series.
Pratchett’s satirical fantasy world is known for welcoming readers of all ages, selling hundreds of millions of books across the globe. Now, publisher Transworld is inviting a new generation into the world of Rincewind and Granny Weatherwax with 10,000 novels distributed across the UK, with longtime Discworld fans invited to revisit this story alongside them.
