As far as fantasy series go, there are very few beyond The Lord of the Rings‘ of this world that can really claim to be as successful and impactful as Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time. Having sold over 90 million copies worldwide across more than 30 different languages at last count, it continues to compete with the all-time modern bestsellers in the genre.
It has since spawned a big budget television adaptation on Prime Video (that ran for three seasons), and a bunch of other licensed releases, including a video game, collectible card game, a comic book, and even a full TTRPG. Now, another one of those releases is on the way, and it could easily be the best of the bunch yet.
Over on Kickstarter, you should be able to find the campaign page for War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, an officially licensed board game from Dire Wolf, the creators and publishers of games including Dune: Imperium and Clank. At the time of writing, the crowdfunding run has been a huge success, currently raising a staggering £622,733, from a goal of just £37,194.
It’s a huge testament to just how popular the fantasy series remains with its millions of fans, but it’s also evidence of just how comprehensive and faithful this new board game appears to be. In describing the product for the community, the publisher shared the following insight about what to expect:
“Robert Jordan’s fantasy masterpiece comes to your table with the first-ever board game based on The Wheel of Time series. War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time chronicles the epic conflict between the forces of light and darkness as players wage war across a land of magic, ancient prophecies, and powerful armies set to save the world … or destroy it. The game combines tableau building, action selection, and area control mechanics in a thrilling struggle of conquest and survival.”
The lowest rate at which you can back the project and receive a copy of the game when it’s ready is $90/£67, with further tiers available at $123/£92 for the deluxe edition with miniatures, and The Last Battle Bundle at $289/£215, which includes all of the above, as well as a bunch of cosmetics being specially made for the game.
The campaign for War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is set to run for another few days, until June 23, so make sure to get in before then if you want to get your foot in the door and secure a copy of the game.
