With Minions & Monsters set to hit theatres on July 2 in India, director and longtime Minions’ voice actor Pierre Coffin has opened up about why the film travels back to the 1920s, revealing that the era offered much more than just vintage glamour. The upcoming animated feature, directed by Coffin and written by him alongside Brian Lynch, is the third instalment in the Minions prequel series and the seventh film in the Despicable Me franchise.

Set in 1920, nearly five decades before the events of Minions (2015), the story follows the lovable yellow creatures as they set out to make a monster movie in the heart of Old Hollywood. Speaking about the decision to set the film during the early days of the film industry, Coffin shared that the period’s rapid social and cultural changes made it the perfect backdrop for the story.

The twenties were fascinating because movies were changing, but so was the world around them. There is the excitement of the studios, but there is also everything happening outside them: Prohibition, public protests and women fighting for their rights. All of that gave the story a richer backdrop and helped us make Hollywood feel like a world in transition.”

Minions & Monsters aims to pay tribute to the golden age of cinema, blending classic monster movies with the birth of Hollywood as audiences know it today. Alongside voicing the Minions, Pierre Coffin is joined by a voice cast that includes Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeff Bridges, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan and Phil LaMarr.
