Shahid Kapoor is reportedly stepping away from Amazon MGM’s apparent Indian adaptation of Freaky Friday, a project that was being produced by Aman Gill in association with Sunir Kheterpal. While there has been no official confirmation from the actor or the makers yet, our industry sources suggest that the actor’s decision comes at a time when he is taking a closer look at the films he wants to be associated with going forward.
The development is particularly interesting given Shahid’s recent run at the box office. Our source said, “His last couple of outings, Deva and Vishal Bhardwaj’s O’ Romeo, had a mild commercial impact. After which Cocktail 2 too did not make an impact on the box office. Therefore, the actor appears to be increasingly conscious of the balance between interesting material and projects that can connect with a wider theatrical audience.”
Our source further added, “Shahid is now being far more selective about the scripts he hears and the films he signs.” In fact, the actor himself recently acknowledged that the experience of Deva and O’ Romeo had made him rethink his approach to choosing films. He revealed that he now prefers having his team present during script narrations rather than making decisions entirely on instinct.

The reported exit from the Freaky Friday adaptation could therefore be part of this larger recalibration. Rather than rushing into his next commitment, Shahid is believed to be weighing the commercial potential, positioning and overall appeal of each project more carefully.
For an actor known for moving between mainstream entertainers and unconventional cinema, this phase could mark a significant shift in strategy. Whether the decision ultimately leads to a major commercial comeback remains to be seen, but one thing is clear, Shahid Kapoor appears to be reassessing what his next chapter should look like.
