The Sandman’s Run As Netflix’s Greatest Comics Adaptation Ended With A Bonus Surprise

Netflix has been the home of several comic book adaptations, but The Sandman’s legendary run stood apart from the rest. The Sandman comics, created by Neil Gaiman, are an incredibly rich and immersive set of stories that transforms classic mythology into something more akin to a modern fairytale. With dark twists and turns, and profound moral ideals, it’s a perfect foundation for a great series.

And evidently, the reception this series received when it began streaming on Netflix in 2022 reflected that. With a stellar cast, ambitious narratives, and world-building that exceeded the vast majority of content on the major streamers’ platforms, The Sandman proved that it belonged in a league of its own.

But beyond all of that, the show also managed to over-deliver, where most modern series fall short. Even in the number of episodes that the series contained, with 11 in the first season and 12 in the second, The Sandman broke streaming tradition by having more than the usual five episodes that could be binged all at once.

Both Seasons Of Netflix’s The Sandman Ended With Special Bonus Episodes

While season 1 of The Sandman dropped 10 episodes on the same day, it also tacked on a two-part bonus episode a few weeks after the season ended. And they repeated this at the conclusion of season 2, with the show releasing the first 6 episodes together, followed by 5 more 3 weeks later, and finally another bonus episode the week after that.

While many fans of shows like Stranger Things suspected the show’s final season may include a surprise bonus episode, The Sandman’s final episodes were genuinely released as a surprise, with no major fanfare ahead of their release.

This is practically unheard of with modern shows, but after resolving the main cast’s storyline each season, the show gave fans further insight into the world of The Sandman by shifting the focus to other characters and narratives. And this choice to wrap up the main story in 10 or 11 episodes before using the final slot to expand made a huge difference for the audience.

In this way, The Sandman far exceeds any other comic book adaptation on the platform. Not only does it have a richer and more fully realized world, but every character feels layered and full of depth, to the point that these bonus episodes are outstanding additions to the narrative and enhance the overall experience and enjoyment of the show.

The Sandman’s Production Value Alone Makes It A Netflix Highlight

But even beyond the addition of bonus episodes, The Sandman benefits hugely from outstanding production value. By this, we don’t simply mean that the series enjoyed a larger budget than other fantasy stories on Netflix, though, of course, The Sandman did benefit from a substantial budget of roughly $15 million per episode in season 1 and season 2, but the show utilized that budget extraordinarily.

Anyone who tunes in to watch The Sandman is transported to a realm of magic and intrigue, which frequently intersects with the real world but is always overshadowed by something out of reach. From creating Dream’s domain to creating convincing demons, the series pulled off an incredible feat in the way it was able to create something that felt so profoundly real and simultaneously otherworldly.

On top of that, as was mentioned above, the series also employed incredible talent both in front of and behind the camera. Tom Sturridge is unforgettable as Morpheus, and the supporting cast are no less enchanting. Ultimately, all of this combined to create something that transcends other products in the same genre, and stands out as the very best of what a comic book adaptation can be. As a result, it may be a long time before anything tops The Sandman.
