Eight years after Steven Spielberg took audiences into the virtual world of Ready Player One, Ernest Cline’s sci-fi phenomenon is returning in an entirely new form. The first-ever graphic novel adaptation of Cline’s 2011 novel is scheduled for release on October 6, 2026, bringing the OASIS back to life through 320 pages of full-color artwork.
The new adaptation, available via Target and other booksellers, arrives more than eight years after Spielberg’s Ready Player One opened in theaters on March 29, 2018. Rather than adapting Spielberg’s movie itself, the graphic novel goes back to Cline’s original story, with comic writer Scott Peterson adapting the material, and Meredith Laxton providing the illustrations. It also arrives as part of the novel’s 15th-anniversary celebration.
Ready Player One Is Entering A New Medium
At the center of Ready Player One is Wade Watts, a teenager living in a bleak 2045 where the virtual OASIS has become an escape for much of humanity. The immersive world was created by James Halliday, a wealthy and eccentric programmer who dies leaving behind a gigantic contest. The winner receives Halliday’s fortune and control over the OASIS.
Halliday’s contest revolves around puzzles inspired by the pop culture he loved, turning Wade’s search into a massive scavenger hunt filled with references to movies, games, music, and other pieces of 20th-century nostalgia. When Wade becomes the first person to uncover a crucial clue, his virtual adventure becomes a dangerous race, as competitors become determined to claim Halliday’s prize for themselves.
That setup should translate particularly well to comics because so much of the original story depends on the contrast between ordinary reality and the limitless possibilities of the OASIS. Laxton’s artwork gives the adaptation an opportunity to establish its own visual identity instead of reproducing scenes from Spielberg’s film, while still retaining the futuristic, colorful, and nostalgic appeal of Cline’s world.
The creative team also gives the project a notable connection to the wider history of Ready Player One. Cline co-wrote Spielberg’s 2018 screenplay with Zak Penn, while Peterson now handles the graphic adaptation, and Laxton illustrates it. Laxton’s previous work includes projects with publishers such as IDW, HarperCollins, and Humanoids, bringing substantial comics experience to the new interpretation of Wade’s adventure.
The Graphic Novel Gives The Sci-Fi Favorite A Fresh Start
The theatrical adaptation of Ready Player One remains one of Spielberg’s most recognizable recent science-fiction projects, but Cline’s original novel has always offered a different experience. The graphic novel provides a chance to return to that source material without being tied to the specific visual choices, casting, pacing, and changes made for the 2018 movie starring Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts and Olivia Cooke as Samantha Cook.
For collectors and longtime fans, the format itself is part of the appeal. The U.S. hardcover is being published by Ten Speed Graphic at a standard list price of $35 USD, with Target currently listing a preorder edition for $24.50 USD. The October 6 release is also planned as the first edition, followed by trade and deluxe editions on March 2, 2027.
The return does not stop with the first book, either. A graphic novel adaptation of Cline’s sequel, Ready Player Two, is currently scheduled for 2028, meaning the new project is being positioned as more than a one-time revisit to the OASIS. For fans who first discovered the story through Steven Spielberg, the new adaptation offers another way to experience one of the defining sci-fi adventures of the 2010s.
