Dil Chahta Hai (2001), directed by Farhan Akhtar, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary! But the Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan-starrer continues to resonate with audiences for its realistic portrayal of friendship and timeless coming-of-age themes. Recently, the film’s makers, cast and some members of the crew turned up for a reunion and spoke to Yuvaa. During the conversation, the discussion turned to a scene in which Akshaye Khanna slapped Aamir Khan 17 times for a crucial sequence.
Aamir Khan’s face was swollen
Farhan Akhtar described the scene on the sets. Sid (Akshaye Khanna) had to slap Aakash (Aamir Khan) during the tense interval scene of the film. The director explained that Akshaye was supposed to slap Aamir at the end of the former’s dialogue. But to give the scene a surprise spin, Farhan wanted Akshaye to slap Aamir while he was still delivering the dialogue. And it happened.
Farhan then revealed, “Aamir was quite a sport and said, let it happen because it’s bringing me into a frame of mind which is helping me. He kept insisting on being slapped again and again and ended up slapping 17 times.”
In the interview, Aamir added that the camera angles, emotion and intensity helped elevate the scene and make it work. Farhan Akhtar recounted that by the time the scene was over, Aamir’s face was swollen on one side and covered in marks.
Dil Chahta Hai ‘slap girl’
Suchitra Pillai played Saif Ali Khan’s girlfriend in Dil Chahta Hai. She too joined the reunion conversation about the ‘slap’ scenes and recalled a slapping sequence with Saif Ali Khan. Recalling that she is still called the ‘Dil Chahta Hai Slap Girl’, Suchitra revealed that when Farhan asked her to slap Saif, she initially resisted.
“I asked Farhan, ‘It’s Saif Ali Khan, come on, how do I slap him? But Farhan insisted and asked me to go ahead and slap.” Suchitra revealed that she ended up slapping Saif three times.
