12 years after its finale, Sons of Anarchy is coming back with a reboot with a twist, and it’s officially replacing Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam). The 2010s saw some of the best TV shows of all time, among them some notable crime dramas, such as Breaking Bad, Peaky Blinders, and Ozark. One of them is Sons of Anarchy, created by Kurt Sutter, which aired for seven seasons from 2008 to 2014. Despite some weak storylines, Sons of Anarchy is still regarded as one of the best TV shows of the 2010s.
At the front and center of Sons of Anarchy is the title motorcycle club led by President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and VP Jax Teller. Throughout seven seasons, Jax, his family, and his SAMCRO brothers went through many ups and downs, including betrayals, tragedies, and losses, along with conflicts with other clubs and criminal organizations. Sons of Anarchy has one of the best TV finales of the decade, and though it left no loose ends, the show is now coming back with a different type of reboot.
The world of Sons of Anarchy has continued through the spinoff show Mayans M.C., comic books, and a novel, and its latest expansion is the TV show Legends. The project was announced in August 2026 and has already been ordered by FX, but it’s important to note that Legends isn’t a new season of Sons of Anarchy nor a proper sequel. Legends is a meta miniseries, and as such, it will replace Jax Teller as the lead, but there’s a fun twist in this.
Sons of Anarchy’s Legends Stars Charlie Hunnam, But Not As Jax
Legends is an unexpected reboot of Sons of Anarchy, as it’s not a sequel series but a meta miniseries starring some of the main show’s main cast. Legends is being developed by Charlie Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, and what’s known about it is that the cast will play fictionalized versions of themselves. The cast will reunite at a Sons of Anarchy fan convention after more than a decade, and the confirmed cast so far are Hunnam, Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Jr., Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi.
It’s during that reunion at the convention that the cast will face a real-world threat worse than anything they dealt with in Sons of Anarchy, with the line between reality and fiction blurring and forcing them to team up to confront this threat. Details on what that threat could be are currently unknown, as are any other cast members (either returning or new ones), but from what’s known for now, Jax’s time is truly over, and Hunnam will be taking over as himself.
While the meta concept of Legends isn’t new, it’s a surprising and exciting choice for a world like that of Sons of Anarchy, and the promise of the real-world threat being worse than those seen in Sons of Anarchy is an intriguing and huge tease. SAMCRO faced other clubs, a cartel, mob bosses, and more throughout the show, so it’s to be seen what Hunnam and the rest will face and how he will lead the team this time.
Legends Can Give A Bigger Focus To Other Sons of Anarchy Cast Members
Although various SAMCRO members got their own storylines throughout Sons of Anarchy, the main focus was always on Jax and his struggles, especially with his family. The concept of Legends makes it possible to share the spotlight a lot better than Sons of Anarchy did, more so as they will have to combine their skills and knowledge to face whatever threat is coming their way.
Legends can allow the audience to meet its Sons of Anarchy cast members a lot better and see what they have in common with their characters as well as their differences, making for a much more complete experience. It’s to be seen what Charlie Hunnam and the rest of the confirmed Sons of Anarchy cast members will do and deal with in Legends, but it’s safe to say that the stories of their SAMCRO characters are truly over.
