The iconic writer behind the beloved Chronicles of Narnia books’ family has finally voiced their opinion about Netflix’s upcoming project.
The relatives of The Chronicles of Narnia author C.S. Lewis have publicly addressed Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Netflix adaptation, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The iconic author’s family issued a heartwarming statement through the streaming platform, praising Gerwig and her approach to adapting the fantasy series, and the love she clearly has for it.
According to Netflix, David and Douglas Gresham, Lewis’ stepsons, and their families expressed their support for Gerwig and the creative team behind the highly anticipated movie. The message followed reports that members of Lewis’ family had raised concerns about certain decisions involving Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. This strongly implies that the alleged negativity was either just a rumor or heavily exaggerated.
The family’s comments provide an important clarification regarding their relationship with Gerwig and the production team. However, the statement was issued before Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’s first trailer debuted on October 13, 2026, meaning it should not be interpreted as a response to the footage.
According to NarniaWeb, David and Douglas have offered an encouraging update about their involvement with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. In their statement, the relatives explained that they are in touch with Gerwig. The director has been more than accommodating and proved how much she appreciated Lewis’ stories, making them confident that she will do the story justice.
From our ongoing conversations with Greta Gerwig, we have personally witnessed her sincere passion for the Narnia series. Her life-long love of C.S. Lewis is apparent to everyone involved with this film. We saw this enthusiasm during our visit to the set in London. We are thrilled to be working with such a talented and accomplished director and production team, and are keen to continue working with them on future projects. Our vision is for this movie to be enormously successful and for this calibre of talent to be applied to all of the Chronicles of Narnia.
Along with expressing confidence in Gerwig, the families stated that they are pleased with the talent that is attached to Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. They also expressed interest in keeping their working relationship with the creative team of the project on potential future adaptations of Lewis’ work.
The announcement is very telling because it followed claims made by Movieguide founder Dr. Ted Baehr, who claimed that Lewis’ relatives were unhappy with Netflix’s film. Baehr told CBN that members of the creator’s family were against the decision to cast Meryl Streep as Aslan. He also alleged that they were worried about the franchise’s future and wanted more control over the company responsible for managing Lewis’ literary and media rights.
Those claims were solely made by Baehr, unlike Netflix, which actually got an official statement from the family saying something that contradicts the former’s allegations. However, the streaming platform’s message did not mention anything about Streep’s casting. But it is important to remember that this specific claim wasn’t confirmed or denied at the time of this article’s publication and should be taken with a grain of salt.
