One Whitaker Scene In The Pitt Doesn’t Bode Well For Season 3

Despite his apologetic, down-on-his-luck demeanor, Dr. Whitaker is perhaps The Pitt‘s most effective doctor. With empathy, sound judgment, and a complete willingness to get his hands dirty, Whitaker is able to comfort patients, deliver appropriate medical care, and get his work done quickly, all at the same time.

Even more impressive, Whitaker has maintained this standard even while dealing with some of The Pitt‘s biggest twists and challenges. When rats got loose in the emergency room, he caught and killed one with his bare hands, and this wasn’t even one of the many times that unexpected fluids forced him to change his scrubs throughout The Pitt season 1.

Whitaker has also been at the center of last-minute surprises that closed both seasons of The Pitt. The tail end of season 1 revealed that Whitaker was unhoused and had been secretly living in the hospital. Dr. Santos invited him to move in with her, and season 2 established them as roommates.

Though he sometimes caught the emotional brunt of Santos’ own personal problems, Whitaker seemed to be one of the only doctors not on the brink of a complete breakdown in The Pitt’s sophomore season. In fact, his steady work ethic and generosity were made a point of concern throughout the season, as Santos and Robby both cautioned Whitaker against giving his patients everything he had.

Similar to the reveal in season 1, Whitaker’s last scene in The Pitt season 2 finale gave a surprising glimpse into the doctor’s personal life, but the implications of the moment may not be what they seem.

After being encouraged throughout the season to establish some boundaries between former patient Amy and her baby, Whitaker’s shift ended with Amy and her son picking him up from the hospital. Not only that, but Amy wordlessly slid into the passenger seat while Whitaker immediately took the driver’s seat, put on some music, and began confidently jamming out for the baby.

The Pitt Season 3 Officially Begins A New Era For One Main Character

The Pitt has put its characters through the wringer, but season 3 is officially beginning a new era for one major figure in the titular ED.

Whitaker’s general demeanor at work, along with Santos and Robby’s assumption that he was being worn thin with generosity, contrasted with the confidence and seeming comfort he displayed at that moment. It remains to be seen whether his relationship with Amy will be an overall positive thing, but this moment revealed a new side of Whitaker regardless.

The contrast was especially noteworthy after the attention The Pitt season 2 paid to Whitaker and Santos’ roommate dynamic. Though Whitaker took Santos in stride more than most other characters, he also admitted that he assumed Santos encouraged Robby to offer him the house-sitting gig because she didn’t want him around. For better or worse, that’s clearly not a concern with Amy.

The Implications Of Whitaker’s Final Scene Are Unclear

There are a few different ways to read Whitaker’s end-of-shift reunion with Amy, and the scene doesn’t lend itself wholeheartedly to any particular one.

The Pitt season 2 had certainly done its part to prepare viewers for the image of an overworked, people-pleasing Whitaker, and this is supported by the automatic expectation that he be the one to drive home after an exhausting shift.

On the other hand, Whitaker seemed completely relaxed at ease in a way no scene had ever depicted him before. That attitude doesn’t align with the idea that he is simply too empathetic to say no to Amy’s wishes. Especially given that he didn’t think Santos liked having him as a roommate, it’s just as possible that Whitaker is happy to be in a place where he feels desired and is finally able to be himself.

Further complicating these opposing takes on the scene is the fact that Robby was the only other person to witness the moment. The Pitt has thoroughly established both that Robby sees himself in Whitaker and that Robby is on the verge of a mental health breakdown resulting from severe burnout from his work in the ER.

Robby’s expression doesn’t reveal much, and his presence at that moment could actually support both interpretations of the scene. It’s possible that Robby was continuing to identify with Whitaker, seeing in him a version of himself that was younger, livelier, and still had something to give.

Conversely, the last few episodes of The Pitt season 2 saw Robby reaching out for connection, even asking his new flame, Noelle Hastings, to join him on his ominous three-month motorcycle trip. Robby may have been looking at Whitaker and realizing that the younger doctor had a life, relationships, and meaning outside the hospital that had consumed Robby over the years.

Overall, though, The Pitt season 2 spent far too much time laying the groundwork for Whitaker’s own burnout for it to be reversed with a single, almost wordless scene. Surely the implications of Whitaker’s relationship with Amy will be unpacked in greater detail in The Pitt season 3.
