Assassin’s Creed Hexe Leak Splits Fans Over Removed Feature

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced might be stealing some of the hype at the moment, but Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe is still slated to be the next truly new AC experience. While leaks have previously revealed some exciting ideas in play for Hexe, the latest one is proving to be divisive so far.

To recap, previous leaks have suggested that Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe will explore the witch trails in the Holy Roman Empire, diving into a darker, horror-themed take on the series. That tonal shift was allegedly set to be accompanied by some new magical elements, but the latter prerogative may no longer be the case.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe Is Cutting The Magic

According to Ubisoft leaker j0nathan on X, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe has jettisoned anything “magical” that was previously in the game. J0nathan cites the ability to control a cat as a previously planned feature that has now been removed from Hexe. The feature may not be gone forever — in a follow-up tweet, j0nathan notes that a return is not “impossible” if development speeds up — but cutting the cat could help with development focus.

This pivot is reportedly the work of Jean Guesdon, the new Head of Content for the Assassin’s Creed brand following some leadership shakeups. In the past, Guesdon worked as the creative director of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Fans Are Divided Over Hexe Leaks

Reddit user Tempastaaa shared the leak shortly after the original post, and responses to the news have been mixed so far. Some of the initial replies to the news are positive, and aj987 asserts that keeping the focus on “historical immersion mixed with the sci fi overlay” will be the best way to recapture Assassin’s Creed‘s original strengths.

On the other end of the debate, Reddit user EMPIRES argues that the game’s use of magic would have been better than critics are giving it credit for. With previous leaks suggesting a “very grounded” take on magic, EMPIRES shares that they’re “very disappointed” to hear that it’s gone.

Without any official footage or even much news to go on, it’s difficult to say for sure whether the development of Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe is proceeding in the right direction. Personally, I just hope that the horror concept stays in place, as that could be a nice way to reinvigorate interest in a series that’s lost some of its magnetism. Seeing the Holy Roman Empire through the eyes of a cat might also be compelling, but you can’t win them all.
