In an exclusive interview with Dr. Carol Coco Diggs of The Industry Highlighter Magazine, Peters opened up about his journey to becoming the Director of Photography (DP) for the new A Different World series, his unexpected opportunity to work with legendary actress and director Debbie Allen, and why supporting Black television is more important than ever. Now streaming in full on Netflix, A Different World introduces a new chapter in a franchise that holds a special place in the hearts of generations of viewers, particularly within the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) community.

An Unexpected Call That Changed Everything

Sometimes, career-defining opportunities arrive when you least expect them. For Peters, the opportunity to work on A Different World came directly from Debbie Allen, who personally called him to offer him the pilot. At the time, Peters was already working as Director of Photography on The Last Days of Tommy Gray, an Apple TV+ project starring Samuel L. Jackson.

The unexpected call presented an opportunity that would become a significant milestone in his career. After reviewing the script, Peters agreed to take on the project. The pilot moved forward, and eventually, a full season was approved. His experience is a reminder that careers in entertainment can change in a moment, but the preparation to take advantage of those opportunities often takes years.

The Power of Reinvention: Three Careers and One Determined Vision

One of the most compelling aspects of Peters’ story is that cinematography was not his first career. Unlike those who enter the film industry immediately after graduating from college, Peters pursued cinematography later in life. After completing college, he eventually attended film school and made the decision to seriously pursue filmmaking.

His journey was far from an overnight success. He started at the bottom, accepting jobs that paid as little as $100 to $200 while navigating the financial realities of pursuing a career in a highly competitive industry. There were bills to pay, rent to manage, and sacrifices to make. Yet he continued to pursue his vision. During the interview, Peters shared a message that speaks directly to anyone considering a career change or pursuing a creative dream: “You can’t be half in.”

His words underscore the commitment required to succeed in an industry where talent alone is rarely enough.
