Beloved PS1 JRPG Is Getting A Remake For Modern Consoles

The original PlayStation might have one of the best lineups of foundational JRPGs ever. Between Final Fantasy 7, Xenogears, and Chrono Trigger, it already has three classics that are widely considered to be some of the best of what the genre has to offer — and possibly even some of the most important PS1 games of all time. However, there are plenty of other excellent and beloved JRPGs from the PS1 era, and it looks like one of them may be getting a remake or remaster soon.

For good or ill, there’s no denying we’re living in an age of remasters and remakes. That means long-running RPG series like Tales, Pokémon, Dragon Quest, Star Ocean, and more have been able to introduce older games to a newer audience. Now, it looks like a PEGI rating is hinting at another re-release being on the way, and users on X are already getting hyped.

Tales Of Eternia Remastered has gotten a new PEGI rating, but seemingly only for the Nintendo Switch. While this isn’t 100% confirmation the classic JRPG is on its way, a rating like this usually indicates that’s so. You can check out the full post from Wario64 on X below:

So far, that’s all the details we have, but it shouldn’t be too surprising. Bandai Namco has been remastering a lot of its Tales games lately, including the most recent Tales of Berseria. Games like Tales of Xilia and Tales of Symphonia have been remastered lately too, and while they’ve all come to Switch, none of them have been exclusive to that console.

It’s possible this initial rating is only for the Switch but that the game will come to other platforms later on. The original Tales of Eternia released on the PS1 back in 2001 in North America, where it launched a few years later on PSP in various other countries. So, it’s no stranger to being on different consoles already, and given its history, it’d be odd to see it skip PlayStation altogether.

Considering Tales of Eternia has never even been on a Nintendo console before, it’s also odd that it’d be a Switch exclusive now. The PEGI rating is still new, so we’ll hopefully know more soon. With PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo all expected to have showcases in the upcoming months, it’s also possible we’ll see a trailer for Tales of Eternia Remastered before too much longer.

While Tales of Eternia may not be the best Tales game ever, it’s a solid entry in the series and for people who grew up with the PS1, it very well might’ve been your first Tales game, so nostalgia alone will make the remaster enticing. It’s also cool to see the Tales series having such a big moment right now, especially considering it’s been around for 30 years but often gets overlooked when compared to franchises like Final Fantasy in the West.

The series hit a high note with Tales of Arise, its latest mainline entry, and since then, we’ve gotten a lot of remasters of older games. While Dragon Quest and Legend of Heroes’ Trails series have also gotten a number of remakes and remasters lately, Tales might just take the cake in terms of actual output.

These games are great, though, so the re-releases will hopefully expose them to a new generation. Hopefully, this Tales of Eternia Remastered leak bodes well for yet another game in the series making its way to modern consoles. We’ll have to wait and see if this PlayStation classic only gets a Switch release in its remastered form, but hopefully it’ll release on all platforms so the most people will be able to check it out.
