Billie Piper Officially Returns To Doctor Who This Summer After Sci-Fi Show’s Indefinite Hiatus

Though the Doctor Who TV show is currently on an indefinite hiatus, Billie Piper has lined up a different kind of return to the franchise later this summer.

At the end of the Doctor Who season 15 finale, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerated into a form resembling Piper’s Rose Tyler, who was a companion to Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor and David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor. It marked Piper’s first appearance on the show since 2013, when she played a Rose-looking representation of The Moment in the 50th anniversary special. While it remains to be seen when or even if the season 15 twist will be resolved, Doctor Who fans can look forward to Piper reprising Rose soon.

Big Finish Productions has announced that The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Dark Tides is available for preorder ahead of its August release. This is the seventh of 12 entries comprising this audio series that reunites Piper and Eccleston after the latter left Doctor Who towards the end of 2005. The Ninth Doctor Adventures season 4 launched in August 2025 with “Snare,” and Camille Coduri has also reprised Jackie Tyler, Rose’s mother, in several episodes.

The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Dark Tides sees The Doctor and Rose leaving Earth again following the last few stories revolving around the Powell Estate, where Rose and Jackie live. Upon reaching deep space, the duo encounter the Knight of Atlas, who, as described in the official plot synopsis, “are on the trail of the long-lost Vesterbold, a mapping ship which explored too far past known space and has been lost for a long time.”

As with all the episodes in The Ninth Doctor Adventures, “Dark Tides” is directed by Helen Goldwyn, and Tim Foley wrote the script. The guest cast includes Doon Mackichan as Dr Vivian Rest, a mysterious survivor found aboard the Vesterbold; Ben Arogundade as the knights’ leader Sir Cal; Sam Stafford as Cal’s squire Mervyn; and David Shaw-Parker as the wise man Holbrook. Foley described “Dark Tides” as a “brutal, gothic space adventure” in an official statement. Goldwyn, on the other hand, said the story “draws in influences from folk tales, medieval stories and even pirate stories.”

Initially, Eccleston was uninterested in returning to the Doctor Who cast following his exit at the end of season 1, resulting in the Ninth Doctor being replaced with John Hurt’s previously-unknown War Doctor in the 50th anniversary special. However, by 2020, the actor became amenable to vocally reprising his character, leading to The Ninth Doctor Adventures beginning in 2021. Piper previously reprised Rose in the audio format for The Tenth Doctor Adventures season 2 and the entirety of Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon.

As for the regeneration twist in Doctor Who season 15’s final moments, it was originally expected to be addressed in a 2026 Christmas special. However, it was announced in June that not only had the next Doctor Who Christmas special been scrapped, but showrunner Russell T. Davies and production company Bad Wolf left the show, too. The BBC has now put Doctor Who up for competitive tender, leaving its return date and Piper’s further involvement in the TV series unclear.
