Disney’s $2.5 Billion Action Thriller Removed From 685 Theaters As Digital Release Approaches

685 theaters are no longer showing Disney’s new action thriller.

Many of Disney’s 2026 movies have become box office hits, including Hoppers, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Toy Story 5, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Hoppers‘ $389 million makes it the highest-grossing original Pixar movie since 2017’s Coco, The Devil Wears Prada 2 grossed an impressive $693 million, far more than its predecessor’s $326 million, and Toy Story 5 reached $1.14 billion worldwide, solidifying it the highest-grossing installment of the long-running Pixar franchise.

From Toy Story to Toy Story 5, how do all 31 of Pixar’s animated movie releases rank from worst to best? Does your favorite rank in our top 3?

After earning $2.5 billion globally, according to IMDbPro, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been removed from 685 theaters. This comes after the movie was in theaters for over two months, beginning on July 31, and, as of October 6, it is available to purchase or rent on digital platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

While it is a large number of theaters to be removed from, the timing makes sense given the digital release and the long theatrical run. Many films do not continue playing in theaters for more than two months, but Disney and Sony’s Brand New Day is a rare case given that it has become the highest-grossing movie of 2026 and the third highest-grossing of all time, only behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, the latter of which reclaimed its crown after the Encore re-release.

Meanwhile, many theaters are still showing the web-slinger’s latest movie, as even after more than two months and a digital release, there continues to be demand for it. Along with shattering box office records, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive, leading to a “Certified Fresh” 90% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In ScreenRant‘s Spider-Man: Brand New Day review, Graeme Guttmann gives the movie seven out of 10 stars and calls it “the best outing of [Tom] Holland’s Spider-Man movies.” The movie also received extensive praise for its grounded storytelling more focused on Spider-Man rather than the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, delivering top-tier action and humor, and exploring mental health in ways that feel timely.

Even after this theatrical run fully concludes, it may not be the end of the movie’s box office potential since a Brand New Day re-release is reportedly in the works, featuring footage of Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple and other scenes that have never been seen before. The MCU just had success with this kind of approach through Avengers: Endgame Encore and the new post-credits scenes it features, although those additions were also included to help set up Avengers: Doomsday, which releases in theaters on December 18.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, with a cast that includes Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Zendaya as MJ Watson, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/the Hulk, Tramell Tilmman as Bill Metzger, Liza Colón-Zayas as Jean DeWolff, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, and Michael Mando as Mac Gargan/Scorpion.
