Star Trek is warping towards an ending before ushering in a new beginning. After Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017, the previously dormant Star Trek TV franchise ushered in a new streaming renaissance on Paramount+ (and, briefly, Netflix with Star Trek: Prodigy). Five new TV series and the first Star Trek streaming movie breathed new life into Gene Roddenberry’s 60-year-old franchise.
2022 and 2023 were the apex of Star Trek on Paramount+. In 2022, a new episode of five different Star Trek series premiered on Paramount+ nearly every Thursday of the year. In 2023, Star Trek: Picard season 3 and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 were acclaimed by critics and audiences, topping the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 charts.
When Skydance Media acquired Paramount Global, Paramount+ began canceling its Star Trek slate, ending existing series and the announced projects in development. Paramount Skydance’s new regime under CEO David Ellison promises to prioritize Star Trek, especially theatrical movies, while the future of Star Trek‘s TV franchise on Paramount+ remains uncertain.

There are still two Star Trek series on Paramount+ which are winding down after wrapping filming on their final seasons. Currently, there is no new Star Trek television in production or greenlit for the first time in a decade.
For fans, however, there are still three seasons of two Star Trek series, totaling 26 new episodes, still to come on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 premieres Thursday, July 23, on Paramount+. Season 4 will be the last season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to consist of 10 episodes, as the previous seasons did. Strange New Worlds season 4 is also the centerpiece of Paramount+ celebrating Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary in 2026.
After its less warmly received third season, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises a return to classic Star Trek space adventures. This includes the Starship Enterprise visiting a dinosaur planet, a film noir episode, and also an already controversial puppet episode. Meanwhile, Strange New Worlds will also lay the groundwork for the prequel’s planned conclusion of bridging to the start of Star Trek: The Original Series.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 is expected to premiere in 2027 on Paramount+, possibly at the start of the year like season 1 did. The hopeful and progressive Star Trek: Starfleet Academy launched with great promise and a charismatic young cast led by Academy Award-caliber actors Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti, but was unable to find a large enough audience after being targeted by online hate campaigns.
Paul Giamatti’s villain, Nus Braka, will not be back for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2, which will depict the cadets’ sophomore year and push them in unexpected directions. Further, Captain Nahla Ake’s (Holly Hunter) family and history as a 420-year-old Lanthanite will be explored. Sadly, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s planned four-year college experience will be cut in half.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will close out its prequel saga with its fifth and final season, which is expected to premiere on Paramount+ in 2027. Consisting of only 6 episodes, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5’s ending is set: Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) will pass the USS Enterprise to Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley).
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ series finale will also debut Thomas Jane as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami as Hikaru Sulu.
Whether Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 will continue to be episodic or will tell a six-hour story to mint Kirk as Captain of the Enterprise isn’t clear. However, Strange New Worlds season 5 will answer long-held questions about what happens to characters like Number One (Rebecca Romijn) who don’t join Kirk’s Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series.

The 15th Star Trek Movie
Paramount Skydance officially announced a new Star Trek movie in development at CinemaCon 2026. While no details were offered, this film is likely the new take on Star Trek by Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves filmmakers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein reported in 2025, which will have no ties to any previous Star Trek movie or TV series.
Paramount Skydance has canceled previous plans to produce more Star Trek movies made for streaming on Paramount+.
There is no premiere date announced for the next Star Trek movie, but it will be a theatrical release. Star Trek is one of the crown jewel IPs that Paramount Skydance is prioritizing to invigorate its movie slate. There are also rumors of more Star Trek movies in development.
Regardless, the next Star Trek movie to hit theaters will be the 15th overall, following 13 theatrical releases and Paramount+’s Star Trek: Section 31, which was made for streaming.

Star Trek TV Shows Pitched That May Not Happen
With Paramount Skydance expected to take the future of Star Trek on Paramount+ in a new direction, the various previously announced or optimistically pitched Star Trek TV series are unlikely to happen. Further, Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout’s decade-long tenure as Star Trek executive producer is ending in 2026, and Kurtzman may be replaced if his contract isn’t renewed.
The Star Trek series fans are most hopeful about is Star Trek: Legacy.
The Star Trek series fans are most hopeful about is Star Trek: Legacy, the 25th century continuation of the USS Enterprise-G led by Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) that Star Trek: Picard season 3’s ending set up. Paramount+ never put Star Trek: Legacy in development, but fans continue to write letters hoping that Paramount Skydance will greenlight showrunner Terry Matalas’ vision.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, a live-action Star Trek workplace comedy developed by Tawny Newsome and Justin Semien was announced. Although the scripts for the unnamed series were completed and submitted to the powers that be at Paramount+, there has been no movement or updates on this Star Trek comedy happening.
Star Trek: Enterprise producer Michael Sussman and Scott Bakula shocked and delighted fans by announcing Star Trek: United, which would mark Bakula’s comeback as President Jonathan Archer. A political thriller and family drama about the early years of the United Federation of Planets, Star Trek: United garnered enthusiastic fan support, but Paramount+ has not said a word about it possibly happening.
The end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would naturally transition to Star Trek: Year One, a spinoff executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are campaigning for. Star Trek: Year One would tell new stories about Kirk’s first year as Captain of the Enterprise. The demolition and auction of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ sets are an unfortunate sign that Star Trek: Year One may not happen.
Star Trek has endured for 60 years, surviving many cancellations and franchise ‘deaths,’ only to be reborn in grander fashion. Star Trek may be entering an uncertain state of transition, but the final frontier is endless, as is Gene Roddenberry’s forever franchise.
