Fallout 2 Open-World Remake Headed To Steam

There’s an awful lot of talk about Fallout 5 at the moment. The second season of Prime Video’s Fallout has led to renewed hope around the video game series, causing many to ask what might be next. With Elder Scrolls 6 the (presumed) focus at Bethesda right now, Fallout 5 is probably still a long way off. But there’s been speculation that a Fallout 3 remaster could be just around the corner.

That’s all well and good. But isn’t it time we showed the original Fallout games some love again? That’s why I was so delighted to hear that a Fallout 2 remake project that aims to rebuild the 1998 game in Fallout 4‘s engine is still alive and well.

Fallout 2 Remade In Fallout 4’s Engine Is Mighty Ambitious

But you have to respect the hustle

If you’ve never heard of it, Fallout 4: Project Arroyo is a hugely ambitious in-development mod that wants to take the world and story of Fallout 2 and turn it into an open-world game within Fallout 4‘s engine. This is being worked on by a dedicated team of fans, and as such is taking a long time to release. But based on what we’ve seen, it looks like it could be up there with Fallout: London as a fan game so good it might as well be an official release.

It was previously confirmed to TheGamer that there are plans to give Fallout 4: Project Arroyo an official release via Steam. “It’s just a platform that everyone has,” the project lead Damion Daponte explained. “It’s easier to access, easier to update, easier to install – it’s more efficient. We would have to figure out all the specificities, making it so you have Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 and all of its DLC to make sure there are no legal issues. But we’re still looking into it.”

While there haven’t been any big updates on whether the game is definitely coming to Steam, it’s worth noting Fallout: London was able to release via GOG, so a proper launch via a digital storefront certainly isn’t out of the question.

The Fallout 2 Remake Is Chugging Along

We just need to be patient

While some gamers believed Fallout 4: Project Arroyo to have been abandoned, the project is still very much alive and well. Regular updates are posted over on X, and a very recent response to one concerned fan over on the project’s Discord explicitly stated it “has not” been scrapped. That message was sent earlier today, January 27, so we can definitely consider Project Arroyo full steam ahead for the time being.

Now the only real question is whether Fallout 5 manages to release before Fallout 4: Project Arroyo. Frankly, I’ll be impressed if the latter ever sees the light of day, even if it’s ten years from now. Let’s not forget this is a team of unpaid volunteers trying to take a complex RPG and turn it into an open-world game. I’m rooting for them all the way.
