Fallout 5 Official Setting Has Gamers Concerned

Fallout feels like it’s an ever-present franchise, but it’s still taking an exceedingly long time to deliver a new entry. Fallout 4 was released over a decade ago, and while The Elder Scrolls 6 has it beat in terms of development time, fans are getting anxious about Fallout 5.

While fans do have the Fallout TV show to pass the time, it’s been a while since we’ve really hunkered down in a new wasteland and explored to our hearts’ content. Fallout 76 scratches that itch for some people, but others are ready for a new solo adventure.

Thanks to a spirited discussion on Reddit, we know what the plan is for Fallout 5. The thing is, not everyone is on board with it.

So far, we haven’t had many updates on Fallout 5. We know it technically exists and that the IP is alive and well, but we don’t have a concrete setting nailed down or even definitive confirmation of the “Fallout 5” moniker.

What we do have, however, is a statement from Bethesda head honcho Todd Howard (speaking to PC Gamer), talking about what Fallout 5 will entail: “Fallout 5 will be existing in a world where the stories and events of the show happened or are happening. We are taking that into account.”

Obviously, this is going to have some impact on the series as a whole, not just the next main iteration. Here’s what the topic creator posits: “Sounds to me like Todd Howard intends to canonize the fall of the NCR and the rise of a nation-building Brotherhood of Steel. Brotherhood of Steel will officially be the strongest of all the legacy factions by the time the show is over and development of Fallout 5 starts.”

Other fans aren’t happy about the direction: “I have 0 interest in a new Fallout game now that Todd Howard has taken a chainsaw to the NCR and all New Vegas lore with this TV show you people love to glaze. If Todd Howard wanted a BoS show, he could have set it in the east or Colorado, like the showrunners originally wanted.”

Some are concerned with the implications of the lore: “Isn’t the Brotherhood at war with the Commonwealth; objectively that means some regression for both is most likely gonna happen.”

A select few are excited about this development, noting that it would have happened naturally anyway in the game’s world: “The NCR was always going to collapse. It was modeled after a doomed world with even less resources. House is a genius, the Legion may be morally awful but is better suited for survival. And the Brotherhood is well suited for the world as well.”

While Fallout 5 remains a mystery, just know that the plan right now is for it to adhere to the TV show’s canon. It’s going to be a tough job, and I’m sure everything won’t translate perfectly, and as you can see, there’s a mixed reaction to it.
