Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster Nintendo Switch 2 Impressions: Is It Worth Playing?

Final Fantasy 10 is basically Square Enix’s Skyrim at this point, regularly offering up new ports of the remasters on whatever systems are on the market. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The stories of Tidus and Yuna have long resonated with Final Fantasy fans, which perhaps explains the various ports we’ve seen of FF10 and its sequel over the past 15+ years. Ahead of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster on Nintendo Switch 2, ScreenRant was able to play both games, and our impressions are overall positive.

I can certainly remember falling in love with FF10 when it first came out on PlayStation 2, chipping away at the main story and trying to get good at blitzball. And then I snagged FFX-2 on day one, immediately underwhelmed by the story but totally in love with its Dress Spheres system.

When the remasters arrived on a single disc on PS3 in 2014, I bought that too and played through both games over the summer. Since then, I’ve played these RPGs on pretty much every system they’ve come to. So, after all of these previous releases, do we really need another port, this time for Nintendo Switch 2?

New Features Make This The Best Version Of Final Fantasy X/X-2 Yet

Final Fantasy 10 Tidus and Yuna, in the game’s water love scene.

The short answer is yes. The Switch 2 version of FF10 and its sequel has the kind of quality-of-life upgrades I wish had existed in most of the previous ports, and it looks great on Nintendo’s latest console. The lack of an ability to speed-up gameplay and skip cutscenes have long been my biggest complaints with the remasters, so it’s fantastic to have that speed-up ability included here.

Compared to later Square Enix remasters like Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age or the Pixel Remasters of the first six games, FF10 and FFX-2′s remasters felt especially undercooked. And it makes sense: Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster was the first FF game to get this treatment, which means later remasters were improved upon that model. But at this point, after all these ports, there’s really no excuse not to include an option to skip cutscenes in FF10.

These remaster issues were mostly fixed on the PC version of the remaster, but this marks the first time we’ve gotten these features on a console edition. And that’s really where Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster succeeds. This is the most streamlined and easy-to-consume version of either game to date. Combining these updates with a console that you can easily take with you on the go is just icing on the cake.

Both games still show their ages at time, mostly with clunky systems (mini-games are especially tedious at times) that already existed, or with cutscenes that feel a bit cringey all these years later. FF10 is still a masterpiece with turn-based combat, a compelling story, and a lovable cast. FFX-2 is still enormously fun, even if there aren’t a lot of other nice things I can say about it. If you’ve played these games before, your opinions on them are unlikely to change this time around.

Is Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster Worth Playing Again?

The downside, of course, is that these are two games most Final Fantasy and RPG fans have played through, possibly multiple times already. If you already have the games on Switch 1, or even recently played through the PS4 or PC version, then you might not be compelled to get these another time. You’ll also get FFX-2: Last Mission and the audio drama with this combo, so if those are new for you, they’re definitely worth checking out.

However, the new options are perfect for people (like me) who’ve played these games before. Want to get through some content a bit faster? Speed it all up. Need to avoid some battles on the Mi’ihen Highroad? You can toggle random battles on and off. Want to relive Tidus laughing at the sky in glorious high definition? It’s got that too.

And if this is your first time, then the Switch 2 makes an ideal console for experiencing Final Fantasy 10 and FFX-2. Both games look great on the system, and it’s nice to be able to change between docked and handheld modes. Playing them in handheld mode is definitely a plus, and they look better (and run faster) than what we’ve seen on the first Switch.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster Gets Its Definitive Version

The Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster feels like the definitive version. It’s been 12 years since those first remasters arrived on PS3, and twenty-five since the original FF10. Square Enix has had all this time to iron out the wrinkles and add in the kinds of features most people expect in their remasters in 2026. At this point, both RPGs are at their very best, even if they aren’t 100% perfect.

Of course, at some point, getting new ports of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster ad infinitum is going to have diminishing returns. That’s a problem for another day, though. Because these latest ports are great, and playing them on Nintendo Switch 2 has officially become my ideal way to experience them.
