Fire Country Season 5 Is Leaving One Of Its Biggest Mistakes Behind

Throughout its run on CBS, Fire Country has never been lacking in drama, but after making some major mistakes in the past few seasons, the series is leaving one of its biggest behind this year. From catastrophic wildfires to disasters that lead to destruction in Edgewater, Fire Country is known for its emergency storytelling as much as its drama. The series tackles complicated family issues and intense relationships as the firefighters of the Edgewater take their personal issues into their work at times, but Fire Country’s ability to weave story around an intense or life-threatening situation has never been questioned.

With the Fire Country season 5 premiere episode bringing one of the show’s patented disasters to life as a sinkhole opens up in the middle of the Founder’s Day celebration, the story was fairly dominated by a single event, which allowed all the other plots within the episode to intertwine as they ventured closer to the emergency. Seeing a singular story that united the rest of the threads being pulled within the episode was a relief, as Fire Country has struggled with stacking its stories throughout the last few seasons. With too much going on, Edgewater has felt fairly overcrowded.

The focus of Fire Country season 5 in its premiere episode, which ushered in a few different stories that will continue playing out throughout the season, was an exciting development for the long-running series. After spending seasons navigating story issues, it seems Fire Country is finally making changes.

Fire Country Season 5’s Premiere Focuses On The Founder’s Day Disaster

Occurring fairly early in the episode, Fire Country season 5 made it obvious that there had been some changes in Edgewater before focusing in on the Founder’s Day disaster. Throughout the early moments of the episode, it was made clear that Bode (Max Thieriot) and the rest of the fire department were feeling the intensity of covering more than just their standard area, working outside of Edgewater without enough support elsewhere. Even so, the updates about what happened between seasons were minimal, and Bode made it to Founder’s Day with his grandfather, Walter Leone (Jeff Fahey), within the first stretch.

When the sinkhole cracked open and swallowed up residents during the town’s annual celebration, Fire Country’s premiere was still in its first act, which made the rest of the episode feel all the more intense and overwhelming. The choice to focus the episode on a singular disaster, which Fire Country has done in the past but often strays away from in favor of multiple smaller emergencies, was the right one. Bringing each character into the mix and allowing Station 42 to reconfigure in the face of potential tragedy gave the episode purpose, which allowed the characters to work together seamlessly.

Rather than crowding the episode with more plot than necessary, Fire Country let the personalities of its characters shine as they worked together to save people from the disaster.

Throughout it’s run, Fire Country has tried different styles with the way it infuses emergencies into each episode. With the onus of the series being a set of first responders, the fact that Edgewater sees as many fires as it does isn’t surprising, but the way that the show has baked in its disasters hasn’t always been the same. Rather than peppering in a few smaller emergencies throughout each episode, Fire Country excels when it focuses on one singular disaster or case, even if that extends out past its initial presentation on screen. While one disaster isn’t always feasible, it makes for better drama.

Fire Country season 5’s premiere was a well-balanced episode that makes it obvious as to what works for the series. The formula of being able to focus on a single emergency while tugging on the threads of other dramas is a better one for the CBS series, and while it’s not something the show can do every episode, constructing each episode in a similar way would probably yield better results than what’s happened on the show in past episodes. Rather than leaning into the mistakes of previous seasons, Fire Country season 5 should take cues from its opener.
