With Street Fighter gearing up for its theatrical release, director Kitao Sakurai has offered fresh praise for Vidyut Jammwal, who plays the iconic character Dhalsim in the upcoming video-game adaptation. Sakurai believes the actor brings a rare level of authenticity to the role, making him a natural fit for the character.

This is not Sakurai’s first foray into video-game adaptations. He previously directed episodes of Twisted Metal in 2023, bringing his experience of translating gaming worlds to the screen. With Street Fighter, the filmmaker has once again made casting a key part of his approach, bringing together performers whose skills and backgrounds align with their respective characters.

Jammwal’s casting as Dhalsim reflects that philosophy. The actor’s martial arts expertise and longstanding commitment to physical discipline made him a compelling choice for the role. Speaking about his decision, Sakurai said, “He’s more Dhalsim than Dhalsim, and he owns it, and he’s so proud of it. He’s bringing so much realness and authenticity to it.”

Sakurai also acknowledged the importance of moving beyond the character’s origins and celebrating his identity with greater authenticity. “The character might have started as a sort of stereotype,” he said, emphasising the intention to present Dhalsim in a way that audiences could connect with.

‘It’s Not Street Fighter Without Dhalsim’

In another conversation, Sakurai reiterated his admiration for Jammwal and his suitability for the part. “It’s not Street Fighter without Dhalsim… And Vidyut Jammwal… He is Dhalsim in every fibre of his being. He is a martial arts yoga master who’s devoted his life to these ancient ways and traditions,” he said.

Jammwal, too, has spoken about his deep connection with the role, suggesting that years of training had prepared him for it long before he was cast. “I’ve been training since the age of three, so I’ve been prepared to do this role all my life,” the actor said.

Sakurai’s directorial credits include projects such as Beef (2026), Butterfly (2025) and Dave (2021), among others.

Produced by Paramount Pictures, Street Fighter is scheduled to release in theatres across India on October 16, 2026, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
