It’s Officially The End Of An Era For Squid Game

While Squid Game is one of the biggest hit shows that Netflix has ever known, the show’s live-action story has come to an end with a dispiriting recent announcement. Thank Heavens for Wednesday. Ever since Netflix’s massive sci-fi series Stranger Things ended with its series finale in January 2026, Tim Burton’s Addams Family spinoff has been one of the few genuinely huge ongoing blockbuster shows currently left on the streaming service.

While the live-action anime adaptation One Piece is critically adored, the show has not yet captured quite as massive a mainstream audience as the Jenna Ortega vehicle. Meanwhile, although the Stranger Things franchise does technically live on through the animated spinoff Tales from ’85, the first season of which was released in April 2026, the humdrum reception of that show’s debut outing proves it will likely never receive the same mainstream attention as Stranger Things did throughout its run.

Of course, there is one other Netflix show that was as big as Wednesday or Stranger Things and, unlike one-off self-contained miniseries like The Queen’s Gambit and Adolescence, produced multiple seasons with the same characters. That show was the South Korean dystopian thriller Squid Game, an intense survival series wherein a group of desperate civilians played life-or-death versions of children’s games for the amusement of elite viewers.

David Fincher’s English-Language Squid Game Reboot Series Is No More

With a simple, straightforward, and immediately captivating premise that took the dystopian Battle Royale story of The Hunger Games franchise and stripped it down to the R-rated brutality and simplicity of the Saw movies, Squid Game was a massive hit when its first season debuted on Netflix in 2021. Ironically, although the show’s original creator could not find a financier to make Squid Game as a movie, as he originally planned, the show’s massive global popularity turned it into a flagship hit for Netflix throughout the following years.

As such, it was no surprise when reports confirmed that the legendary director David Fincher, of Se7en, Fight Club, and The Social Network fame, was eyeing up an English-language reboot of the massive franchise. With the working title Heckler, Fincher’s take on Squid Game was said to be coming from the pen of Utopia creator and screenwriter Dennis Kelly, according to The Playlist. However, movement was slow after the first rumors of the reboot emerged in 2024, and Netflix has now reportedly moved on from the plan.

With this show not moving forward, it’s hard to imagine Squid Game returning as a scripted series anytime soon. The franchise will live on through merchandise, the reality show Squid Game: The Challenge, and other peripheral tie-in media, but the original story of Squid Game itself is seemingly over. Of course, the fact that the original show was such a huge hit with English-speaking audiences meant that Fincher’s remake always ran the risk of feeling redundant.

Squid Game’s Reboot Cancellation Almost Certainly Marks The End of the Franchise’s Live-Action Run

While Fincher’s involvement ensured the show was exciting, a potential English-language take on Squid Game was hardly an inherently promising prospect. Prioritizing a new reboot of Squid Game over more seasons of the canceled sci-fi series Altered Carbon or Fincher’s own classic psychological thriller Mindhunter would have relied heavily on the director’s ability to find a fresh new take on the familiar material.

As such, while the reboot’s cancellation makes the likelihood of any new live-action Squid Game series a lot lower, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Instead, it is promising to hear that Netflix will be pursuing new, original shows, one of which could become a viral breakout hit like Squid Game, instead of unnecessarily rebooting a franchise that was beloved precisely because the series felt fresh, original, and urgent when it began in 2021.
