J.J. Abrams Discusses What Makes The End of Oak Street Different From Jurassic Park

This August, a new survival film titled The End of Oak Street arrives in Indian cinemas. The story is based on the Platt family, played by Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, whose ordinary suburban life is interrupted when their neighbourhood is suddenly transported to an unknown location. To survive in these strange surroundings, the family must rely on each other.

With the film’s premise involving dinosaurs appearing in a neighbourhood, comparisons to the Jurassic Park franchise have surfaced. Producer J.J. Abrams recently addressed these comparisons and explained why he believes this film offers a different experience.

About the setting of the movie, Abrams said, “I think people are hungry for new stories, original stories, and to me, the undeniable appeal of this is the fact that it takes place in suburbia.” He contrasted the film’s environment with the backdrop typically associated with dinosaur movies. Abrams mentioned, “I love the Jurassic movies as much as anyone, but those films, for the most part, take place in these beautiful jungles, these distant islands. David’s whole approach here was the juxtaposition of the absolute mundane suburban family life — swing sets and ice-cream trucks, and above-ground pools and school buses — and dinosaurs.”

For those who have seen the promotional trailers, Abrams added, “If there’s any part of you that is excited by what you saw in the trailers, I can promise that the movie will deliver on everything.” Apart from Hathaway and McGregor, the cast includes Maisy Stella and Christian Convery. The film is written and directed by David Robert Mitchell. It is produced by J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella, Jon Cohen, David Robert Mitchell, Matt Jackson, and Tommy Harper. The executive producers for the project are Chris Bender, Jake Weiner, Joanne Lee, and Leeann Stonebreaker.

The End of Oak Street is a Bad Robot Production and a Jackson Pictures Production, presented by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is scheduled to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures in August 2026. The film will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, and will be released in cinemas and IMAX.
