After a phenomenal run at the box office, Suriya’s Karuppu is all set to make its OTT debut on June 12. Directed by RJ Balaji, the action drama arrives on streaming after emerging as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 and one of the biggest hits of Suriya’s career.
Released on May 15, Karuppu overcame a turbulent start to become a major box office success. The film was initially scheduled to hit screens a day earlier but faced last-minute hurdles owing to pending financial settlements involving financiers associated with the production. Despite the delay, the film opened to strong numbers and quickly gained momentum through positive word of mouth and favourable reviews.
Over the course of its theatrical run, Karuppu grossed more than Rs 175 crore in Tamil Nadu and crossed Rs 304 crore worldwide. The film’s success proved particularly significant for the Tamil film industry, ending a prolonged dry spell at the box office and setting several new benchmarks along the way.
Within four days of release, the film surpassed the lifetime collections of Singam 2 to become the highest-grossing film of Suriya’s career. It then raced past the global earnings of films such as Mersal, Petta and Thunivu before entering the Rs 200 crore club in just eight days. Three weeks later, it continues to hold its position as the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year.

Suriya plays a guardian deity seeking justice
Karuppu sees Suriya step into the role of the titular guardian deity inspired by Karuppasamy, the revered folk deity associated with justice and protection. The story begins when a distressed family calls out for divine intervention. Upon arriving on Earth, Karuppu finds himself confronting a legal system that has been manipulated by corrupt individuals for decades. What follows is his mission to expose wrongdoing and restore balance.
An excerpt from Filmfare’s review of the film stated, “Karuppu attempts to combine several distinct impulses within the framework of a mainstream entertainer. Directed by RJ Balaji, the film draws on the imagery of Karuppasamy, the Tamil guardian deity associated with justice, and uses that cultural foundation to tell a story about institutional failure and moral reckoning. It is an ambitious and often compelling film that remains involving largely because of the conviction with which it approaches its material.”
Alongside Suriya, the film stars Trisha, Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy and Natty Natraj in key roles. RJ Balaji also appears as the antagonist, Baby Kannan.
The technical team includes cinematographer GK Vishnu, editor Kalaivanan and composer Sai Abhyankkar. Their contributions, along with the film’s performances and thematic ambition, have played a key role in its success among audiences.
Having rewritten several box office records during its theatrical run, Karuppu now gears up to reach an even wider audience through its digital premiere. The film’s arrival on OTT marks the next milestone in what has already been a remarkable commercial journey.
