Scott Summers, the legendary leader of the X-Men, has an awesome new design, updating how he uses his powers as Cyclops. Cyclops’ optic blasts are incredibly versatile, with a power level varying from a finger tap to a literal A-Bomb. Now, he has a whole new way to deploy them.

At least among Marvel’s household-name heroes, Cyclops has the most misunderstood powers, with many believing his kinetic blasts are ‘heat vision’ or that his eyes are a gateway to a ‘punch dimension.’ In fact, he absorbs ambient energy and converts it into kinetic force, using his visor to control when and how his optic blasts are released.

Now, Cyclops has a new way to use his powers, with a fantasy-inspired redesign that channels his abilities in an unusual new way.

Cyclops Gets a High Fantasy Redesign in X-Men Lore

In the recent X-Men United #4 – from Eve L. Ewing, Tiago Palma, Brian Reber and Joe Sabino – the X-Men venture into a fantasy world patterned after Dungeons & Dragons. Designed by Iceman and realized by reality warper Ben Liu, this world is intended as a team-building exercise, and a way to end the hostility between Emma Frost and Cyclops. Of course, the X-Men quickly end up trapped there.

Upon appearing in the fantasy world, Cyclops takes on the appearance of a Ranger, with a yellow and blue costume combining with a brown hood and cloak. The star addition is a bow patterned after Cyclops’ visor, with a glowing red string which allows him to fire his optic blasts like arrows.

Taking on a cave monster, Cyclops is able to fire an optic blast arrow, seemingly guiding its path in midair with his traditional blast. Not only is this a creative use of Cyclops’ powers, but it starts to mend bridges with Frost, who admits she’s glad to have Scott Summers in her party.

Cyclops and Emma Frost’s disagreement stems from the new Graymatter Lane school – a telepathic academy accessible to all mutants across the planet. Frost argues it’s vital to educate young mutants and provide community and support, while Cyclops believes the school will act as a target and put young mutants at risk. As the adventure continues in future issues, the two will hopefully come to an agreement.

Cyclops’ Recent X-Force Redesign Also Gave Him a Weapon

June 2026 seems to be the month for weaponizing Cyclops’ powers, as the recent What If…? Uncanny X-Men #1 (from Gerry Duggan, Jan Bazaldua, Arthur Hesli and Clayton Cowles) did a similar thing. In that comic, Cyclops was blinded by Mister Sinister, later fitted with a cybernetic visor which allowed him to see and channeled his optic blasts into a rifle.

After the loss of his wife Madlyne Pryor, this Cyclops founded a new version of X-Force, becoming a far more vicious hero, and ultimately going to war against the powerful mutants of Arakko, losing his son in the process.

The idea of Cyclops channeling his powers through a weapon seems to be on Marvel’s mind – something which is particularly interesting given Chris Marsden’s upcoming return to the role in Avengers: Doomsday. With a teaser for the X-Men’s involvement showing them in a losing battle against a Sentinel army, could an injury lead the MCU’s Cyclops to wield some kind of weapon?

Recent comics have redesigned X-Men’s Cyclops to channel his optic blasts through weaponry, with upcoming issues of X-Men United continuing Scott Summers’ further adventures as the team’s badass archer.

United X-Men #4 is available now from Marvel Comics.
