Mike Flanagan’s Horror Streaming Return Is Just 4 Months Away

Mike Flanagan is returning to streaming with a highly anticipated horror TV project, and it’s just four months away. Mike Flanagan has earned his place among the modern masters of horror with his work on film and TV. In the latter, Flanagan stood out with his Netflix horror TV shows, most notably The Haunting of Hill House, which now ranks not just among the best horror shows but also among the best TV shows of all time. After The Fall of the House of Usher, Flanagan moved on to other projects outside Netflix.

Parallel to his TV career, Flanagan continued making movies, such as Gerald’s Game (released on Netflix), Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, all of them adaptations of Stephen King stories. Flanagan now has two upcoming horror projects that can make or break his career, one for the big screen and one for TV. The latter continues his trend of collaborations with King and will give new life to one of King’s most popular works: Carrie.

Carrie is King’s first published novel (though not the first one he wrote), and since its debut in 1974, it has become a classic of horror literature. Carrie is now a franchise, which began in 1976 with Brian De Palma’s movie adaptation, after which it got three more movies (a sequel, a TV movie, and a new big screen adaptation), a TV special on Riverdale, and different musicals. However, Flanagan’s version aims to be different.

Mike Flanagan’s TV career so far has been all about his Netflix projects. The success of The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor led to a Netflix deal for Flanagan, thanks to which he brought the TV shows Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan’s Netflix deal is now over, but he now has one with Amazon MGM Studios.

Thanks to it, Flanagan was able to develop a TV adaptation of Carrie. Now, while the show is based on King’s novel, it’s described as a “reimagining”, but it’s keeping the same premise. Flanagan’s Carrie, then, follows outcast high schooler Carrie White (Summer H. Howell), who is constantly bullied at school and abused at home by her domineering and religious fanatic mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan).

Mike Flanagan’s highly-anticipated Carrie show must include some of the best features from Stephen King’s iconic horror book and the movie remakes.

Following her father’s sudden death, a bullying scandal, and the struggles of high school, Carrie begins to develop telekinetic powers. Carrie doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s expected to be released on Prime Video in October 2026, right on time for Halloween. Of course, there’s a lot of anticipation and excitement around Flanagan’s take on Carrie, and it’s to be seen how he infused his narrative and visual style into this King classic.

Carrie will be Prime Video’s biggest horror release for Halloween 2026, but it’s going to have some strong competition. One of the most anticipated horror shows is Crystal Lake, a slasher show based on the Friday the 13th franchise. Crystal Lake is a prequel to the first Friday the 13th movie, and though details about the plot haven’t been revealed yet, it will follow a young Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini) and her young son, Jason (Callum Vinson), at the title camp.

As such, Crystal Lake is expected to cover the events that led to Jason’s tragic death at Camp Crystal Lake and the dark history behind this place. Crystal Lake is set for an October 15, 2026, release on Peacock, and it will be eight episodes long. Possibly joining Carrie and Crystal Lake in October is American Horror Story season 13. Although not confirmed yet, Ryan Murphy’s hit anthology show will be released in late 2026, quite possibly in time for Halloween.

October 2026 will be a big month for horror fans on TV, and it’s to be seen if American Horror Story and any other TV shows will also get October release dates. Until then, Carrie and Crystal Lake are enough to create a lot of excitement and anticipation around Halloween 2026.
